Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey), 24 September 2023

HAPPY NEW WEEK!

I hope everyone has a wonderful week.

We are experiencing peak bird migration right now here in the Midwest. Last night, 6,632,500 migrating birds were confirmed over the state of Indiana. 4,761,000 birds crossed over the entire state. We've all been warned to turn our lights out so that we don't disturb the birds.

It's too dark here on my patch and the trees are too dense and tall to see them, but I hear them at times, especially if there's geese. The mosquitoes and biting gnats will eat me alive if I go outdoors at night. (LOL)

Hugs to all.

  • ...........but chocolate is better!
  • HEATHER: I am VERY glad that your son-in-law is on a plane now and will be arriving back from Australia. The US government shutdown will likely snarl international airline travel/security. That's one reason why I mentioned the potential shutdown (to make sure you all were aware of it).

I'll be back tonight with more replies, all.

  • Lindy - I hope your OH is Ok and that you haven’t caught the bug.

bjane - I will take some photos of the grass garden next time I visit the zoo.

We had a lovely 4 mile walk along the Wales Coastal Path today from Greenfield Dock to Bettisfield and back.  We had a couple of light showers but it was mostly sunny and breezy. The botanists were very happy and made a long list of plants. I will include one in the photos which I have never heard of!!! Bird wise there were great and little egrets, cormorants, curlew, oystercatchers, redshank, turnstones, ringed plover and the usual hedgerow birds. We also saw 5 Atlantic grey seals hauled out on the sandbanks.

    This is ribbed melilot!!!!

Other views plus the dragon beacon at Bettisfield constructed for the millennium when we had a chain of beacons.

  • Evening all:   Gardener came, saw, trimmed and tidied.  Back in two weeks; there's a lot of catch up for him.

Rusty:  Loved that last pic of the river....

    Lindybird:  Hope OH is better.

    Take care everyone.

  • Morning all

    @Pat O re the spiders,,,

I have a "long handled spider brush"  that is used actually for cleaning my high ceiling picture rails, as we live in an old bungalow. This manages to trap the critters and then can be safely deposited outside the house.

I see on' Amazon' if you type in 'spider catchers, 'there are some clever extended purpose designed spider catchers.

I always remember my MUM " saying ,when I used to wince ,at the spiders in the house.

" If you wish to live and Thrive,

Let a Spider run alive"  CHOL:):)

  • RUSTY - thank you for the pics and the descriptions of your walks - much appreciated !
My friend from Pembrokeshire was staying last week in a place called Porthmadog in North Wales. They were very unlucky with the weather, sadly.
  • Clare - I adore grapefruit as I like tart flavours, but I'm not allowed them or juice, on the meds I'm on, sadly. I miss having it on my holiday breakfasts.

My OH is no worse and typically, is now sweeping leaves after trimming the bottom hedge. He's going to help me put in some tulip bulbs shortly - no rain yet, today! I hardly dare say that I don't seem to have a sore throat -- yet!

Rusty, enjoyed your photos, what a super job they made of the Dragon for the Millenium beacon.

Porthmadog is not far from where we go in Wales, Heather. They were indeed unlucky with the weather, as its an area well known for the milder climate - in summer, its often an area where they break records for the temperature!

  • ROSY – apologies re attribution of spider and fly killer! Can’t remember who it was. (Later – surprised to see it was Pat!)

RUSTY – glad the walk was successful – especially for the botanists – people don’t take enough notice of wild flowers these days!

ANNETTE – sounds like gardener made a good start!

LINDA - Glad OH is well enough to sweep leaves! Agree – Porthmadog is a good visit!

Door fitted this morning – made a complaint and refused payment! Somebody will contact us tomorrow – just not as agreed with surveyor! Also had podiatrist visit – no dressings for either of us today! An afternoon for tidying up.
  • OG - what a nuisance about the door. I hope you are able to get it sorted to your satisfaction. Why is nothing ever done properly these days?
Well, I think we have, fortunately, avoided the worst of storm Agnes here. We had some heavy rain but the winds weren’t all that strong. I met for lunch with 7 of my former colleagues. We had a very good chat and a nice meal. I don’t need any tea. I shall eat the remaining piece of birthday cake!!!!
