MANTON BAY - AUGUST 2023 to end of FEBRUARY 2024

Continued from Manton Bay - July 2023

Details about the Manton Bay nest can be found on the season’s opening post.

The season so far:  Blue 33(11) returned March 16 @ 12:58 and Maya on March 19 @ 06:54.  Maya has laid four eggs - Apr 4 @ 15:52, April 7 @ 09:04, April 10 @ 07:03 and April 13 @ 08:08.  38 days later on May 12 @ 08:18 the first chick hatched followed by chick #2 on May 14 @ 06:36 and chick #3 was first seen @ 05:45 on May 17.  Chick #4 hatched on May 18 @ 18:53 and not long after a live fish was delivered to the nest causing havoc and the little chick died the following morning.   On June 24, the chicks were ringed – Blue 3H3(F), Blue 3H4(M) and Blue 3H5(F) and their vitals can found here.   On 3 July @ 09:24 Blue 3H3 fledged followed by Blue 3H5 on 6 July @ 10:23 and Blue 3H4 on 9 July @ 06:12.

And now the month has come when one by one the chicks, who have been spending their days strengthening their wings and practicing their flying skills readying themselves for the epic journey that lies ahead, will set off south.  But they are well prepared having had the best possible start in life under the care and protection of their fantastic parents, Maya and Blue 33(11).   But until that day comes, let’s enjoy their time with us.

  • 08:08  3H3 is on the nest -  fishless!

Didn't think she would manage to hold on to that one

  • And a vid of this morning when 33 tried to take yesterday's fish off the nest.. and everyone jumped on him (quite literally)

  • 08:35  33 arrives with another fish - headless, so he has eaten too

and this one taken by 3H5

    soon tucking in

  • 4 fish today 05:02, 07:28, 11:28, 18:21

    In the video:
3H4 is in the nest.. then his sister 3H3 kind of drops into the nest.. 3H4 isn't very happy and chases her off.
Later at 18.20 an unringed osprey lands on the nest.. I can't really tell if it's Maya or not, doesn't look like it really..
3H4 chases that one off the nest too though.. and a moment later 33 arrives with a big fish..

    However..
I haven't seen (or heard) 3H5 at all today.. Has she left already??

  • 04:58  33 arrives with a fish

3H4 arrives and claims the fish

05:20  3H4 finishes, leaves the fish cleaning his beak

05:22  Maya arrives and grabs the fish

05:23  3H4 approaches Maya some for fish

05:32  3H4 has had enough and turns away

05:34  3H3 comes down from the campost - think it has her who did the fly by earlier and missed landing on the nest - and takes the fish

05:35  Maya flies off closely then 3H3 flies off with the fish

  • 07:59  33 arrives

    appears defensive

soon joined by Maya -  something causing them concern

the adults fly off and ENS until

    08:59  3H4 returns, and calling

I have not seen 3H5 this morning as no sign of her yesterday as reported above by Bart

I wonder if she has set off or perhaps just off exploring as they sometimes do
