LOCH GARTEN - END FEBRUARY 2024

Link to July 2023 thread

July proved to be a less nail-biting month than June. Brodie re-appeared early on the 1st and delivered fish (including flounder) to the nest every day bar 1 thereafter, with a record count of 7 on the 21st. Asha also fished and delivered a salmon on the 3rd, as well as quite a few sticks, not least one to replace the sticky-up stick on the nest that got removed on ringing day - 12th July. We have 2 boys, as only 7% of those surveyed had predicted. 2C5 (oldest) became Sid (Vicious) and 2C4 (youngest) is Harry (Nilsson). We had some cracking snaps particularly from the PTZ camera, a 2am fish, self-feeding started, and wing-flapping and helicoptering. Bets are on for a fledge or two very early in August. Sid is 58 days and Harry 56 days on the 1st of August

  • There was some questioning if it was Brodie, have a pic from a few weeks ago to compare. I believe it was.

  • Amazing footage, how it was able to float on the water and turn the fish around under water and take off with it in the correct position. You really see the size of their wings, in one of the last photos.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • Welcome mccann, nice to see you here.  I'm sure I've seen you posting on Chat too.  Thank you for the link to photos taken at Gordon's pond.  I'm not sure I've seen a vid of it before!  I think AU6 is a regular there, and is a king pin, but I could be wrong.  Thank you Trevor for the heads up.  It appears Brodie was spotted by the VC at 13.01 standing all relaxed on one leg on the old nest posts.  The cam took a while to actually focus on him.

    13.01  Seen on cam

Spent the next two hours preening, and keeping an eye on all around him.

15.22  Brodie flew.  PTZ had a search, but didn't find him.

Captures for future reference!  You never know when we may need it.

for some reason the PTZ zoomed out for a while, showing the old nest tree, and the bare topped pine just beyond it where Brodie has been spotted before

then mid-way, which shows the dark spot I have referred to which does't show as such on close-ups

    and back in again

14.22.03  Was he aware of something he didn't like?

    and at 15.22.24 Brodie left

The PTZ did a scan, but couldn't find anything or Brodie

But that event was 10 days ago !!!

    Trying: https://**LINK BOCKED**facebook**LINK BOCKED**/RSPB.LochGartenAbernethy/videos/1024869282032783

EDIT - as you can see, link blocked.  I have saved it to my hard drive... but best not upload it to YouTube and publish here, and I don't think it's that interesting anyway, except to show that we did have a slim-looking unringed female visit briefly on the 10th of August.

EDIT 2 - OMG, please don't think I'm criticising dearest you, KORKY - it's just that LG have chosen today to post an unknown lander from 10 days ago when we've been wondering about today's.

  • Looks similar but I think it’s a different female. Eye placement, head shape & top head markings different. Asha (left) has more dark?

  • It’s a shame the video has music over it. Would love to hear that splash.

    Me too! Blush

Here's the pesky spider - I wondered if it was catching something on the "rim", but the wind played ultra havoc on the close-up.

Here's Brodie - apologies for making the colour too intense/bright:
