LOCH GARTEN - END FEBRUARY 2024

Link to July 2023 thread

July proved to be a less nail-biting month than June. Brodie re-appeared early on the 1st and delivered fish (including flounder) to the nest every day bar 1 thereafter, with a record count of 7 on the 21st. Asha also fished and delivered a salmon on the 3rd, as well as quite a few sticks, not least one to replace the sticky-up stick on the nest that got removed on ringing day - 12th July. We have 2 boys, as only 7% of those surveyed had predicted. 2C5 (oldest) became Sid (Vicious) and 2C4 (youngest) is Harry (Nilsson). We had some cracking snaps particularly from the PTZ camera, a 2am fish, self-feeding started, and wing-flapping and helicoptering. Bets are on for a fledge or two very early in August. Sid is 58 days and Harry 56 days on the 1st of August

  • Thank you Canuck - I lost it today!!

It has been very difficult to watch the goings on, Catlady.  I gathered there were problems at LotL, but I'm afraid I don't follow the nest, despite visiting in May/early June.

I have to say KL5 is a fine looking osprey, when he is not trying to evacuate the nest!

If he does oust Brodie (if he returns) next year, I think Asha and KL5 will have a feisty relationship!  Who will be the alpha osprey, LOL

  • I would not like to mess with Asha Sheila!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • I think that Asha will be a difficult mate. She has never accepted the male on the nest as say, Manton Bay or Glaslyn. She just wants the fish, and then she sees them off. Sad really.

I don't think Brodie was allowed to feed either of chicks, but he was allowed to incubate the eggs - a necessity.  Did he even get the chance to brood them for long?  He certainly wasn't allowed to stand and watch Asha feed them.  Was she worried he might pinch the fish.

  • This is what you get when you ask ChatGPT to put the chat lines from yesterday's fight into a story:

In the tranquil realm of Loch Garten, where the shimmering waters mirrored the serene skies, a dramatic tale of struggle and bravery unfolded among the ospreys that called this place home.

It was in the early hours of dawn when an unexpected visitor made its entrance. An osprey, with wings outstretched, touched down on the far left side of the nest. The two young ospreys, affectionately known as 2C4 and 2C5, sounded the alarm with urgent calls that echoed across the waters. A name floated on the breeze – Asha, a guardian perhaps?

A sudden realization swept through the observers – this was no ordinary guest. It was KL5, a name that sent shivers down their spines. KL5, the intruder, a shadow that darkened the peaceful skies. A feeling of dread settled in as the young ospreys' calls became more urgent.

Responding to the danger, the young ospreys hurriedly gathered at the nest. KL5, with an air of arrogance, perched upon the camera perch, seemingly taunting the brave fledglings. Moments passed, and KL5's predatory gaze shifted towards the nest perch, a chilling reminder of its audacious presence.

But the battleground was not limited to the perches alone. The young ospreys, only recently mastering the art of flight, found themselves in a life-or-death aerial duel. KL5, driven by its relentless determination, launched its assaults. The skies became a battlefield as wings clashed and cries of distress pierced the air.

Among the chaos, 2C5 emerged as a valiant defender. With fierce determination, it chased KL5 across the expanse, refusing to yield. Yet, the older sibling, 2C4, was not far behind, demonstrating the resilience bred into them by the wilderness.

As the clash continued, onlookers hoped for Asha or Brodie, the stalwart parents, to intervene. Their absence was keenly felt, like a missing piece in the puzzle of protection. KL5's attacks grew more savage, sending the fledglings into desperate maneuvers. The young ospreys' feathers caught glimpses of freedom, albeit a harrowing one.

Then, a moment of relief – a shadow in the sky that was unmistakably Brodie. Hope surged anew. But it wasn't just Brodie. Were there more? Perhaps a third, even a fourth osprey, aiding in the fight against the relentless KL5. The sky became a theater of aerial acrobatics, feathers and talons locked in a high-stakes dance.

Brodie's timely arrival seemed to sway the balance. KL5's assaults waned, and the young ospreys regained their footing. But the battle had left its mark – exhaustion etched on their wings, and determination in their eyes.

In the aftermath, the fledglings sought solace on the nest, their sanctuary. The drama had taken its toll – crashes, pursuits, and adrenaline-filled maneuvers had tested their newfound flight skills to the limit.

Yet, the Loch Garten skies were not empty of hope. The fledglings would heal, grow stronger, and learn from this fierce encounter. KL5's intrusions, though fierce, had unveiled the indomitable spirit within 2C4 and 2C5, a testament to the wild resilience that courses through their veins.

As the sun set over the tranquil waters, casting a warm glow upon the nest, the Loch Garten ospreys prepared to face another day. And in their story, woven with bravery, struggle, and hope, the legacy of survival continued to unfold amidst the beauty of nature's theatre.

Yikes!  I think  you've saved me experimenting with ChatGPT, BART - it reminds me of what my English Lit teacher said to me, as she handed back my (failed) paper - "Well, you can certainly write - if only you knew what you were writing about" Rofl

Definitely away this time - it seems that KL5 has flown too, but the cam is still zoomed so we know not where.

  • That's brilliant, Bart! Thank you.
One slight correction. #1 Chick is 2C5, #2 is 2C4, the one we have a soft spot for because he was often victimised by his elder sibling.
Now both appear to be missing. along with Brodie

Edit!!!  I've just realised exactly what you, and Scylla, meant!!! an AI!!  It has no idea of emotion!!

  • Holy smokes Bart. That is incredible! What a picture it painted of the day. Dramatic! Most of it was spot on, just got it wrong about Brodie arriving and "Perhaps a third, even a fourth osprey, aiding in the fight ". We are a descriptive bunch of chatters if AI could come up with that story. Wow!
  • 16.04 KL5 is still on the dead tree.

Two snips taken earlier, 'cos I think it was worth it!  Butter wouldn't melt...!
