LOCH GARTEN - END FEBRUARY 2024

Link to July 2023 thread

July proved to be a less nail-biting month than June. Brodie re-appeared early on the 1st and delivered fish (including flounder) to the nest every day bar 1 thereafter, with a record count of 7 on the 21st. Asha also fished and delivered a salmon on the 3rd, as well as quite a few sticks, not least one to replace the sticky-up stick on the nest that got removed on ringing day - 12th July. We have 2 boys, as only 7% of those surveyed had predicted. 2C5 (oldest) became Sid (Vicious) and 2C4 (youngest) is Harry (Nilsson). We had some cracking snaps particularly from the PTZ camera, a 2am fish, self-feeding started, and wing-flapping and helicoptering. Bets are on for a fledge or two very early in August. Sid is 58 days and Harry 56 days on the 1st of August

  • Last night's Barn Owl, not edited much until the last bit when it gets hidden:

More later, probably much later Frowning2

  • Morning all. There were no big birdies on the nest, but I found some little birdies and one big one.

Osprey lands on the top of the dead tree, left.

    Male Chaffie on Asha's perch.

Great tit on nest, middle left.

Blue tit on nest, bottom right and another wee birdie flying past?

Think I have the species right? Well I know the first one is!!

  • This morning's KL5 attack (I decided not to post 2C5's first visit, which was eventless apart from his screeching):

I hope we hear from the VC re status of Harry - we're not going to see much on the PTZ unless someone lands plonk in the middle or on th end of the perch Frowning2

  • Redstart on the nest again 12.43

Nothing yet. Your video was a hard watch but thanks!

  • There's a lot of buffering, but the red start has been having a lovely time

I loved the vid of the barnie, Scylla.  What a wonderful time he had.  I care say the nest is fully suitable bugs for it!

I am concerned about the boys, and indeed Brodie.

Some interesting comments on Chat, before they all disappeared and I didn't copy it all -

09:34     Valerie  @Steven staff at LG would certainly rescue a osprey if injured and on the ground I am sure

09:45     Valerie  I am sure the staff and everyone at LG will be watching the situation very carefully this morning and do whatever is needed

09:55     Valerie  Obviously Abernethy is a huge area and they can only see certain areas

09:57     Kukelke KL5 can easily be here for another couple of weeks to try to lay claim on the nest.

It looks as tho KL5 has been fishing.  Neither of the boys are around

Perhaps we need to learn to ID his patterns!

  • 13,31 the fish tail goes down

    Nice poses

    13.33 KL5 flew off

13.37 and was found on the dead tree

Still no sight or sound of the resident three males

  • The Redstart, PTZ view slightly cropped:

KL5 - without and with fish:

Now they've zoomed on him but too late for the video.

    Off I go, SYAL Hugging

  • If you want to see the last 24 hours of chat, in case yours disappears, go to Bart's site.

    https://ospreycam.net/

He captures 24 hours of chat for LG, Glaslyn, Poole Harbour, Port Lincoln and Seaside.  The last two are embedded in their observation boards.

  • Oh dear, what a few days we have had here, it has been awful. That KL5 is determined to take over here, even bringing back fish and having it!!! Where are Asha and Brodie and what about our boys, fingers, and toes crossed here, they are both alright.

Similar situation at Loch of the Lowes latterly this year, mum, dad and one chick away, with no sightings and then the second chick away, may have been sightings of someone yesterday butI have not been following in detail. Hope all will be okay there.
