LOCH GARTEN - END FEBRUARY 2024

Link to July 2023 thread

July proved to be a less nail-biting month than June. Brodie re-appeared early on the 1st and delivered fish (including flounder) to the nest every day bar 1 thereafter, with a record count of 7 on the 21st. Asha also fished and delivered a salmon on the 3rd, as well as quite a few sticks, not least one to replace the sticky-up stick on the nest that got removed on ringing day - 12th July. We have 2 boys, as only 7% of those surveyed had predicted. 2C5 (oldest) became Sid (Vicious) and 2C4 (youngest) is Harry (Nilsson). We had some cracking snaps particularly from the PTZ camera, a 2am fish, self-feeding started, and wing-flapping and helicoptering. Bets are on for a fledge or two very early in August. Sid is 58 days and Harry 56 days on the 1st of August

  • 13.45  Sid is half lying down, calling.  Harry is on the rim watching.

14.23 Sid make a plaintive cry, gets up and wants a fish.

14.31  Harry briefly joins in.  It's getting increasingly windy.

14.33  Sid flew off.  Blue AK5 landed on the nest.  Harry told him where to go, but didn't mantle nor did he flap him off., but he did leave.

14.34 Sid returned, and flew off again.

14.37  Harry on the nest alone, flew off and returned.

14.43  Harry starts to call and half mantle.  Sid returns,  They don't know whether to call or preen!

14.49 Harry stops both, Sid preens.

15.03 Harry shows his blooded under wing

15.12  Sid flew away.  I saw someone land on the old nest posts.

15.15 Harry flew away  PTZ stays on the nest

15.20 cam pans to the old nest posts.  It was Harry who landed there.  He is preening again.

15.53 Sid takes off.  PTZ moves to the camera.  Harry has returned and both are calling.  Is that an intruder or a fish coming!

It appears neither.  Just a united demand for fish!

  • 2C4 appears to be bleeding again. His right leg is now red with blood. Do hope his wound doesn't become infected

  • I very much hope the wound doesn't get infected, Billy.  I expect all the mantling against KL5 isn't helping it to heal though.  He needs a couple of days with little exercise really.

  • 16.41 Just after this Harry, 2C4 flew away.  At the moment there are no obvious problems with the injury, even if it doesn't look good for him.

  • 17.09 Harry flies, ENS Nothing obvious on what we can see on the dead tree, PTZ totem pole.
17.10 Calls off, Sid lands, mantling and calling, but it is Harry who lands. Both are fish soliciting, but Brodie isn't obvious. Sid keeps looking up. Is that being ever hopeful?
17.19 After a loud outburst, Harry left the nest to the left. Sid preens.
17.24 Sid also flies, to the right. Calls can be herd in the distance.
    17.51 ENS, all quiet

    Bye all!

  • 17.57 Sid returns calling loudly
18.35 he was joined by Harry
    18.38 Sid flew off
18.42 Harry really looks fine, is active and bright, but I don't like the sight of the blood on him.
    18.47 Harry flew off
18.51 I became all excited when Sid landed. I noticed the spotty undercarriage, then realised it was under this wing not the petticoat, so not Asha. Harry followed him in
By 19.09 they had both flown again
    ENS

    Bye again!!

  • 19:07:15 nice close up of under 2C4's wing.  Look really good.  No new bleeding.  I believe the original injury was at the wrist with the blood then trickling down.  In this screen capture, can't even see the injury.  Hopefully it doesn't get infected.

  • Well did I miss all that fun and games? The tablet was off early evening, working day today, so only getting to catch up now. Looks like and I really do hope that Harry is okay. That must have been some vicious attack. Good that they were both defending and after that KL5. Where deed were mum and dad during all this carry on? Hope things settle now and Harry gets some well earned rest. Good he has had a good share of the fish today.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • 2C5 and now 2C4 have both visited the nest, yelling for fish. 2C4 still has (old) blood on his under-right-wing feathers but he seems to be flying well
  • The boys waiting for fish last evening - none came, they left.

    11 August

The cams  have been buffering but recovered in time for the boys to fly in to defend vs KL5 (I presume), who's been on the campost but now on Asha's perch !!!
