LOCH GARTEN - JULY 2023

I start this thread with a heavy heart, as Brodie hasn't been seen at all on Friday 30th June. The last fish delivered to the nest was at 21.11 on 28 June, over 48 hours ago. Brodie was last sighted at 09.10 hours on 29 June, over 36 hours ago.

Chick 1 hatched 'early morning' on the 4 June and chick 2 overnight on 6 June. One egg didn't hatch (maybe number 1?). There were lots of intruders during the month of June, including KL5, and last year's male Axel on the weekend of 17/18th.  Brodie has disappeared before for a couple of days, and no fish were delivered over the first weekend after hatching on 10/11th June so maybe we should keep the faith and cross all eyes, toes and fingers that Brodie will come good, recover from whatever keeps him away from his nest and chicks, and deliver a stonking fish first thing on 1 July.

  • Thank you Jill for the good news of the super fish delivery, and Wendy and Catlady for the pics..  It wasn't easy to get good captures.  Everything looks the same colour and texture these days, but this shows the diameter of the fish.

Brodie went down to 'his' perch to chill and preen

#1 waits ready to take anything offered.  #2 looks away

and is ready with open beak

#2 managed to get some fish on its beak, but had to wait to be fed

As has already been said, ?Catlady, #1's crop is huge!!  #1 certain got a good feed, unhindered.

15.08 Brodie is still preening below.

15.20 just after I snipped this (seconds) Brodie flew away, and Asha started to call!

Reminding him that she wants another fish, and not to keep her waiting!

    15.40 she is still calling

16.31 she has a flyabout, and returns with a licheny clump, possibly old heather.

    16.40 a lookout post

    17.20 she is still there

FISH! Sorry my broadband is too crap today to post any snaps

As WENDY's snap shows, we didn't get a good angle on the way in, and my trip to the PTZ was pointless:

I thought I must have made a mistake over one of #2's timings so I rechecked and the whole feed lasted over 1h10m AstonishedGrinning

Asha was blocking our view on the PTZ, so the cam spent quite a lot of time on Brodie:

  • Spiffin  Catlady. Wonderful observations   . Thank you

  • Nice fish 18.17

  • It's raining but Asha's off the nest on the dead tree, avoiding her mumbrella role

EDIT 10.10 she's back on the nest

  • 19.23 Asha flew away, and was heard landing on the compost.
21.26 she called, probably an intruder call, quacking at times as she called.
    , and flew off.
21.27 she called again from a distance, three times.
21.31 she called again, and again.
21.32 another called and she landed on the old dead tree near the PTZ.
21.54 it's raining. The chicks are getting wet as Asha remains on the tree.
21.58 the chicks are lying side by side, possibly keeping warm.
22.11 the chicks are complaining about getting wet. Asha takes off and lands on the compost, before dropping down on the nest. She was in no hurry to cover them, preferring to looking around, possibly for the unseen intruder.
22.21#2 heads towards mum, trying to get some cover.
22.40 it's a very wet scene as it gets prematurely dark. She is sort of covering them, but they are too big now

  • Wow, I missed all those posts thru having the RF open so long and taking so very long to do the lunch video!  Thanks to all!

Chick 2 then sat and fed for 24 minutes.

I'm so glad you timed that, I really thought I'd made a mistake - having cropped off the time for the sake of closer viewing.

Asha spent a restless rest-of-evening, she was on the campost when suddenly she repeatedly alarm-called and flew off - ended up on the dead treetop for a while, the chicks had an active session, especially #2, then they all settled down in the rain.

  • Fish at 6 50 am nice size

    Morning all

  • 11 July

    It's been a wet night.

Here's breakfish - I haven't stopped to clean up the wings cos I'm packing up:

PTZ is zoomed out, and in any case it was the wrong angle.

    Byeee till later.

  • At the moment both chicks feeding together side by side

Did not take long for #1 to push #2 out
