                        LM6                   LJ2

So far so good! The first 2 chicks are doing well, the 3rd just hatched this morning.

  • 16.43 LJ2 glides in with a small fish

He allows LM6 to take it straight away.

It’s tricky to see the feed.

Not much better with this view.

Looks like the fish is finished. 16.53

  • 18.08 LJ2 brings in a live fish but what a commotion he causes

LJ2 doesn’t want to give the fish to LM6. He holds on tight.

LJ2 walks the fish forward and stops for a moment, he pecks at the fish. It looks like he is going to feed the chicks.
The chicks are calling in anticipation. LM6 is calling too, she moves closer to take the fish.

LJ2 takes the fish further away.

He knocks #1 on the way past who then attacks #2

LM6 is following LJ2 round the nest calling for the fish.

LJ2 keeps walking round then shuffles backwards through the chicks.

#1 reacts again by attacking #2

LM6 is still following LJ2 asking for fish. LJ2 turns away from LM6 and the chicks to start eating the fish himself.

LM6 chooses her moment to grab the fish with her beak

As she takes the fish, #1 starts attacking #2 again. The chicks are hungry, the last fish was a small meal and it was delivered quite a few hours after the one before.

    18.15 At last, LM6 begins a feed with #1 - #2 still in submission

It is 18.27 before #2 joins the feed

Looks like the feed (and fish) finished around 18.42.

  • 20.00 LM6 sheltering the chicks, enjoying a bit of evening sun.

  • Brenig Facebook posted a video of the jumping pike that LJ2 brought to the nest yesterday at 21.27.

  • LJ2 sits quietly on the preening perch before retiring to the nest perch for the night. (Nest arrival 22.52)

  • Tuesday 20 June

Good morning Grinning LM6 left the nest early this morning at 04.28 to go to the preening perch for a few minutes. The chicks were under the watchful eye of their dad.

She returned to the nest at 04.51

LJ2 left a few minutes later at 05.00 to go to the preening perch.

It’s been so good having this extra camera this year, seeing one of the places the birds go to when they’re off nest.

  • 07.00 LJ2 drops by. His family tell him they are hungry as he tidies some sticks at the edge of the nest.

  • 08.55 another visit from LJ2 and more words of encouragement from LM6 and the chicks to go fishing,

  • 11.27 and the first fish of the day arrives. A whole one.

Thankfully, LJ2 allowed LM6 to take the fish straight away.

LM6 started to feed the chicks just as LJ2 flew away.

Initially, the feed was going well. However, LM6 was favouring #2 over #1.

LM6 was a bit slow with the feeding and the chicks were diving in grabbing at the fish.

#1 wasn’t getting much of the feed at all so it turned on #2.

LM6 fed #1 a few pieces then #2 got up again. #1 was still hungry so pecked at #2 again to keep it down

#1 got a good feed and a few minutes later #2 got up again and joined the feed.

LM6 fed both chicks then #1 turned away

#2 continued to feed until LM6 came to the tail and ate it. Feed finished at 11.56.

  • 13.36 LJ2 flies in from over the water with a fish

LM6 calling, goes to collect it

LJ2 has other ideas and holds onto it. The chicks go towards him.

The chicks get a few scraps but it’s a slow feed. LM6 is still calling for the fish.

The chicks are a bit confused. They’re not getting much from dad, #1 wanders over to mum.

LJ2 finally gives the fish up for LM6 to take. He does his backwards walk in between the chicks, standing on them as he goes.

After a few minutes LJ2 flies off. LM6 now has the feed under control.
