LOCH GARTEN JUNE 2023

Link to May 2023 thread

Asha is the proud parent of 3 eggs, the father of which being dubious but probably URM - now called Brodie - as we hardly saw NN2 (for whom we wish all the best elsewhere) be accepted by Asha. Brodie had a lot of trouble fending off intruders which has made him a bit flaky in the fish catching and delivery department. Poor old Asha didn't eat for over 2 days last week. The main intruder was KL5, who seems to have stopped hanging around so much now, which is good as we approach hatch date and the need for fish will ramp up.

A scylla-super-snap of the happy parents-to-be

 Also, courtesy of scylla, here are the laying dates;

25 April - egg 1

28 April - egg 2

01 May - egg 3

  • third fish at 21:11. headless but a nice big one
  • Here's your fish Canuck

    (c) RSPB Loch Garten

  • I've just found that. That is good to hear. Tummies will go to bed full now, and possibly some left over for a morning snack.

  • I haven't done anything I was supposed to, instead have exhausted self with the 19:28 meal, during which poor little #2 didn't do well:

The 21:11 feed started badly for #2 but after #1 had eaten it did OK and they ended up harmonious.

  • 29 June

#2 unwisely tried to preempt an attack:

At this point #2 went into submission and got away lightly:

Suddenly Asha got wind of "someone":

Eventually... there he is!  without a fish!

    EDIT

He flew off, couldn't see where.

  • My internet went down several times after 11:00, it seems OK now.

Here's a little vid of Brodie on the branch, I do hope he's gone fishing (Asha's been on 'n off the nest):

  • 06.05   Asha brought in a sticky stick - as per Scylla

"#2 unwisely tried to pre-empt an attack:  At this point #2 went into submission and got away lightly:"

    09.00  Rain in the air

09.57  #1 chick showed off his strength by a bit of furniture moving.  #2 sat up to watch before looking inquisitively at the wider world.

09.10  "Eventually, there is he!  Without a fish.  Sitting on a branch.  He flew off out of sight.  as per Scylla

                Vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRGHY6Z6XkU&t=49s

10.08   Asha started food soliciting, looking towards the PTZ/old nest/old perches.  Had she seen Brodie before he flew off?  Chat said he was on the PTZ, but I couldn't see him              – old eyes!!  Chicks are chuntering (it's a technical term!!).

10.09  Brodie flew off his tree branch

    11.47-8   Asha appeared uneasy

11.48.16 #1 chick tried to lift a stick on the rim

11.49.07  Asha flew off to the right- quietly.

11.49  Intruder calling.  Osprey flew and landed on the tree just on the left, above the old nest.

11.50.13  Calling continued as osprey flew off, towards and over the nest before disappearing.  I am assuming it was Asha

11.50.46  Asha landed on the nest perch, still intruder calling, and flew off.  Pic

11.53.36  Asha returned to the perch, calling, then quiet, watching.

12.17.33  Again, Asha gives a shrill intruder call and flies off.  Her calls could be heard in her absence.  Chicks lie low.

12.19.26  Asha returned to the perch. Looking defensively around her.

12.25  Still looking around her, but perhaps more relaxed.

    12.55  Relaxed enough to preen

13.07.16  She left the perch, flew off and returned to the nest, with a greeting to the chicks.  She immediately started moving a very awkward stick, dragging it over #1 to the near right rim.  She stood on the rim, looking below and around.  What's she spotted?

13.09  She backs to the cup area, again keeping an eye around.  Chicks are anticipated

13.46  She looks around – OK, where is he?

13.54  Something caught her eye, her head bobbing side to side to focus – and leaves quickly and quietly.

13.55  Asha returned.  The wind is interfering with the sound.  She can see or hear something..

13.57  Asha continues to be alert, looking around her.

All quiet.  The chicks can be heard chuntering at times.

  • Thank you, SHEILA!

    Unpolished videos.

A little later, Asha assaulted #2 with that awful stick she'd brought in earlier:

I managed to catch the chicks sitting up but #2 steadfastly looked away.  Don't mention the frame colour/s.

Well this is a worry, whatever can have happened to Brodie? Frowning2

  • Oh dear, how worrying.

The chicks have been tucked up under her, as much as they can, since 18.45. It is either damp or chilly up there tonight.

I'm hoping for a quick couple of fish for supper tonight!!  Last night's last one was 21.11
