LOCH GARTEN JUNE 2023

Link to May 2023 thread

Asha is the proud parent of 3 eggs, the father of which being dubious but probably URM - now called Brodie - as we hardly saw NN2 (for whom we wish all the best elsewhere) be accepted by Asha. Brodie had a lot of trouble fending off intruders which has made him a bit flaky in the fish catching and delivery department. Poor old Asha didn't eat for over 2 days last week. The main intruder was KL5, who seems to have stopped hanging around so much now, which is good as we approach hatch date and the need for fish will ramp up.

A scylla-super-snap of the happy parents-to-be

 Also, courtesy of scylla, here are the laying dates;

25 April - egg 1

28 April - egg 2

01 May - egg 3

  • All very quiet, possibly rain in the air - Asha is brooding the osplets, having an occasional shut eye.

No it doesn't show up well, everything's too camouflaged!  Good for them but bad for us Blush  Here's a little movie as a Thank You for all your fantastic reports, Sheila Kissing heart

  • That's brilliant, thank you Scylla!

The soap opera continues, remember Asha's man from last season? Well, he is back! He hasn't taken too kindly to his new situation at the nest. Here is a little update on the best of the nest from this last week.

  • I checked FB to see whether the VC might have given any update on where Brodie might be or whether an intruder or two were causing bother, but there's nothing.
So from my reading today, and when I've watched live, there has been no fish delivery today. Although we only saw two fish yesterday, one of which Brodie took away with him - it wasn't a big one, - there were, I think, two leftover fish, both fairly substantial. All three on the nest fed well, but I would like to see another fish today

    Yesterday, 19 June
05.10 Asha retrieved a good sized leftover fish and fed the youngsters. She may have fed them earlier as #2's crop was bulging.
06.24 #1 fish delivery from Brodie. I hadn't noted anything more about size or whether head or headless.
07.13 when it was raining Asha spotted the leftover fish again and while still lying down she pulled the long piece of attached skin towards her and started to eat it. She got up and dragged the fish, by the skin, over the osplets to the far side and tucked in properly.
09.35 Feeding continued on and off until #2 headless fish arrived courtesy of Brodie, while Asha was feeding the osplets. Although tempted to take the new fish, she held onto the not unsubstantial left over fish. Brodie waited for her to come and take the new fish, and when she didn't he spotted yet another left over fish on his side of the nest. He left his #2 fish and headed for the larger, older one, but then thought better of it, and went back to the new one and flew off with it. So we had two left over fish, one
of which she had been feeding from since at least 05.10 and the one that Brodie spotted, and left.
13.08 Asha finally downed the fish with the very long piece of skin - almost in one go!

I stopped my notes at 14.30, but Asha continued to feed the osplets on a regular basis. So I think Asha had one fish delivery, a second which was taken away by Brodie, and two left overs!! I think...!

Come on Brodie. Please pop back again, even if it is to annoy Asha, and let us know all is well. It would be interesting to know what sort of territory he patrols each day.

  • There has been some major furniture moving going on!

I am surprised there was no squealing and complaining from the osplets

    and it continues

there was a very awkward wishbone shaped one.

    17.50 she is calling.  Brodie??

  • Still no sign of Brodie, but it must be raining a bit.  Asha is brooding.

  • 18.28 FISH #1 quite a decent wide one, headless. She got into a pickle trying to take it and was the wrong way round to feed the osplets, but all was sorted.
18.32 she is settled feeding them both, and Brodie has flown

    I'm off now.

  • The first snap is from the left edge of the PTZ, the view got worser Stuck out tongue winking eye as it entered - and as can be seen, it wasn't much better on the nestcam:

  • Thank goodness Brodie brought fish, was getting a bit desperate again!
