LOCH GARTEN - May 2023

Link to March/April 2023

.

After a start/stoppy kinda season, we now have settled couple "URM" (until LG give him a name) and Asha, or Mistle as some would prefer.

Asha is the proud parent of 2 eggs, the father of which being dubious but probably URM, as we hardly saw NN2 (for whom we wish all the best elsewhere) be accepted by Asha.

URM and Asha are similarly marked but distinguishable by certain differences which I may slot in here but I've lost them for the time being.

Asha (R) is looking rather small in this snap because she's crestfallen due to no supper:

Because Asha did so much work on the nest before she had a partner, there hasn't been a lot for URM to do - but he has quite frequently brought in nest material - and his fish provisions have been regular and willingly handed over.  He's a promising Osprey dad so far.

  • Brodie has been back to the nest but couldn't see fish. I think he took over incubating but I still get mixed up with them
  • Yes Billie there was a swap over in incubation.. like yourself find it hard to tell them apart
  • According to Valerie on chat, the Darvic ringed intruder was KL5. I'm in the car ATM, but will check when I'm back. I think he was around last year, and liked by 'us'.
So good to see that a well fed Brodie is back, but without a fish. Come on lad , go a-fishing, or explain yourself.

  • It's ok RSPB decided to give me that name as log in. I'm female so it would be Billie if that was my proper name
  • You weren't imagining things Scylla, chat said Brodie was back, full crop but no fish for Asha, went back on cam & got this

  • See I'm late to the news, still no RF so can't edit ... yes Billie Brodie is incubating!

  • Yes that’s I saw .. just wondered if I’d missed a fish as was in the kitchen for a while
  • Possibly BlueKL5, who was around last year as a first-time(?) returner, intruded 12:06 and 12:20:

And an hour later, Brodie turned up - fat-cropped but fishless, as already noted - Asha carried on with the domestic chores she loves, as if he'd never been away:

    FELLOW LG FORUMITES:

As this RF problem has been going on for days, Tech HQ must have been auto-notified many times but nothing has happened - I do think we should think about contacting "someone", anyone got any ideas?

(I checked Wildlife on the Web to make sure it's not confined to the LG forums section of the Community, and it's the same there.)
  • Well that's a good start. Twice now I started to type this and twice the page disappeared and I was left with a large triangle with an exclamation mark in it. "That was unexpected - we apologise (my S, they had a Z), but an unexpected issue prevented the page you requested from being available" Hmmm And I don't have RTF either so apologies for no formatting.

So, my update, with thanks to Scylla for her vid of the blue ringed intruder.

17 May 11.30 No reports of sightings of Brodie
12.06.55 Osprey intruded, flying above the nest, trying to land. Asha defended, called and flapped.
12.20.42 Intruder. Asha called, stood up and looked up as an osprey lowered and hovered above the nest, with legs showing. Asha flapped her wings and called loudly. The intruder flew up out of sight. Blue Darvic on left leg.
    12.21 Asha settled down.
    12.27 Asha began food soliciting.
13.19 Asha looked intently, Brodie returned after 20 hours or so, arriving over the back of the nest, fishless. There was no exchange between them. Asha got up and flew off. Brodie took over incubation duties.
13.21.43 Asha returned with a small stick and gave a weak cheep. She was moving sticks around, hinting, and then started calling.
13.23.19 He didn't take the hint. Asha flew off. It's blustering. An overall gray day.
13.26.54 Asha returned with another mossy stick, and started nattering, as she padded aroun, rearranging the furniture on the rim. She was in danger of losing a very sticky stick. The volume has been turned up a notch.
13.29.13 Off she goes again. Such a look of 'what have I done wrong' on Brodie's face LOL.
13.31.17 Asha returns with a stick, puts in on the front of the nest and calls loudly
13.31.32 Off she goes again, the wind lifting her up and away.
13.41.26 Back, with something small in her talons, and moves some more sticks at the front of the nest. Calling again. Brodie shuts his eyes and ignores her. Has he been out on the razzle at another nest!!
13.42 57 She starts making it obvious, standing on his tail and pushing his side until he gets up.
13.43.56 Brodie flies away, Asha settles, then starts to call, so Brodie hasn't gone far.
    14.00 Asha stops calling.
14.00.21 A stick is blown from 'our' side of the nest, over Asha, to her right sides. Without getting up she sorts it, but she is looking intently off the nest.
14.03 Another stick on her right side is annoying her. She drags over her back to her left.
15.5416 Asha got up to check the eggs: the wind got under her tail and tipped her up. Her composure recovered, she incubated.
14.22 Valerie on 'YouTube Chat' LG has confirmed it was Blue KL5 who intruded earlier.
17.30 Asha has remained in this position ever since with a bit of paddling beneath. No sign of Brodie with a fish, and no return of the blue ringed intruder who may or may not be Blue KL5(20)m who was so gentle with IC1 last year. He intruded/visited several times. IC2 put up a good defence.

I hope this makes sense with no formatting, even if a lot doesn't transfer well.
