LOCH GARTEN - May 2023

Link to March/April 2023

.

After a start/stoppy kinda season, we now have settled couple "URM" (until LG give him a name) and Asha, or Mistle as some would prefer.

Asha is the proud parent of 2 eggs, the father of which being dubious but probably URM, as we hardly saw NN2 (for whom we wish all the best elsewhere) be accepted by Asha.

URM and Asha are similarly marked but distinguishable by certain differences which I may slot in here but I've lost them for the time being.

Asha (R) is looking rather small in this snap because she's crestfallen due to no supper:

Because Asha did so much work on the nest before she had a partner, there hasn't been a lot for URM to do - but he has quite frequently brought in nest material - and his fish provisions have been regular and willingly handed over.  He's a promising Osprey dad so far.

  • 12 May - SHEILA's report re noise on cam - I first got a hint of it at 12:50, then 7 minutes later a more definite sound, just a demo:

    13 May

First birdies this morning were little ones starting @ a few minutes after 03:30, then Wood Pigeon, then Cuckoo, then a very distant goosey call.  I didn't listed for very long.

First changeover was between 04:36 and 04:40 - because they both spent time flying around.

Sticks brought in but if there's been a fish I've missed it:

Buffers and glitches galore, didn't see this fly-in, nor the landing on the perch.

    That's up to about 15:50.

no updates since yesterday, im just testing to see if the thread is working.

Sorry, CakeBoy, I got here in the end.  This thread is like a swan - nothing happening on the surface but plenty going on below.

  • Whew!  Thank goodness I copied what I had already typed.  I suddenly realised I had been logged off!!

I went thru things for the first four hours or so, but had to drop it and go out, so Scylla has dealt with most of what I spotted, but it is worth mentioning a beautiful feather!

05.44  After much pondering on who was who! Asha returned to the nest and Brodie flew to Odin's top perch before he flew over the bog at the back and to the south by my reckoning (the right side)

08.11.30 Asha flapped her wings and one of her spotted 'petticoat' feathers fell out.  It dropped to the front left rim on the outside.

08.34 a puff of wind blew it behind the pronged stick, and a few seconds latter is disappeared.  Oh to be at the foot of the tree!  I do hope the under spots are still there when she finishes moulting.  I use them as a source of ID!

12.10 I noticed another moulted feather on the nest, a white fluffy one.

13.50 Asha got up suddenly and intruder calling she flew off to the left.  I have no idea who or what upset her.

13.50.31 she returned, landing first on the perch, as Scylla's pic above, and then to the cup.  She had an intent look around before settling down.  She continued to keep a wary eye on her surroundings.

15.49 she had a comfort flight.  It is beautifully sunny, but possibly cold.

    15.50 she returned.

16.35 she stood up and had some beautiful stretches, legs and wings

    and then flew off

16.38.54 she returned, and slowly resumed incubation.  There was a lot of faffing involved!

17.17 she stood up for a spot of preening, a stretch and a flap, then a general look around, a scratch and back to incubation.

The skies don't look so blue just now.  No sign of Brodie, and apart from one burst when she shot off the nest calling, there have been no intruder incidents.  No fish today so far.

  • Thank goodness you had saved your work Sheila. It’s so annoying when you don’t realise you’re logged out and lose what you’ve noted! Weary

Your detail is amazing, thank you. Blush
  • Thank, YOU, Glider! It's fun to check the detail, but I don't always have the time.
21.07 Asha spotted something, and suddenly got up and flew away. I've got the sound off, so I don't know if she called. She returned just before 21.09, bringing a thick stick. She sorted that, and resumed incubation, but was hindered by a licheny stick behind her. That sorted, and then picking up a twig or two which had fallen too close to the cup, she settled.
She may have spotted something to our right, but it wasn't a problem. She looked intently, but didn't react.
    Still no sign of Brodi.

I think that is me for today.

Out and back - no sign of her flying around while she was away:

17:47 she got up and shifted the licheny stick behind her that got caught in her tail, but it didn't make a snap as she was masking it with her body.

A tribute to our girl but there's not much happening here - stretching wings, later a flyabout and she brought back a stick - and no sign of Brodie by nightfalll Frowning2

  • OH, thank goodness: here are the two of them - WHAT a relief

    Absolutely !!!

Asha did her early flyabout @ 04:04, then again @ 06:08, returning via the perch.

07:42 - Brodie turned up, fishless, and took over:

Since then Asha's been bringing in sticks - she took over again for a short while but suddenly off she flew, Brodie came back, and she started bringing in sticks again!

This stands in for 2 little ones and a footful of dirt:

09:48 - Brodie fled - you can see the worried look on his face Grin

As at now, Asha is still waiting for a fish.

I did a video of Asha's first stick earliest stick, before any of the snapped ones, but gave it up when I saw where she was heading...

  • I wonder why there appears to be a lack of fish being brought in by Brodie.  You'd expect Asha to be yelling the ceiling off if she were hungry.  Neither has a hollow chest.  Has there been a sneaky exchange off the nest that we don't see.

I am also fascinated to compare last year's nest, with this, and it is mainly down to Asha I think.

This day, last year, as Mistle left with a fish delivery from Axel

Today, it's windy, with rain in the air
