LOCH GARTEN - May 2023

Link to March/April 2023

.

After a start/stoppy kinda season, we now have settled couple "URM" (until LG give him a name) and Asha, or Mistle as some would prefer.

Asha is the proud parent of 2 eggs, the father of which being dubious but probably URM, as we hardly saw NN2 (for whom we wish all the best elsewhere) be accepted by Asha.

URM and Asha are similarly marked but distinguishable by certain differences which I may slot in here but I've lost them for the time being.

Asha (R) is looking rather small in this snap because she's crestfallen due to no supper:

Because Asha did so much work on the nest before she had a partner, there hasn't been a lot for URM to do - but he has quite frequently brought in nest material - and his fish provisions have been regular and willingly handed over.  He's a promising Osprey dad so far.

  • I am confused again, but I think I've sorted it out!

13.38  Asha took a short comfort flight.  She returned seconds later and settled back on the eggs

14.12 Brodie landed.  Asha stayed down and began nagging, checking his talons for fish.  He stood quietly on the rim.

14.14  Asha got up and flew off.  Brodie stepped gingerly into the cup, paddled beneath and settled on the eggs.  He wasn't happy, tried to get up and tipped forward on his beak before rearranging himself and settling once again.  Asha was on Odin's upper perch, and could be heard calling for fish!  She was having a good preen.

    14.33  Asha left the perch

14.34  Asha quietly returned, with some nesting material.  There were quiet contact tweets.  She wandered around the nest, looking for left overs, getting closer to Brodie's head.  Eventually he got up, Asha had a few words and he flew off.  She kept a keen eye on him, before resuming incubation. There is very little wind today, so there is no excuse for not fishing.

I can't see him at all, so perhaps he has flown away.  It's turning into a lovely afternoon, with blue sky and sunshine.

    Hmmm Another monster

I accidentally clicked on Birdie's data in your sig, SHEILA, and couldn't resist opening a thumbnail with EJ on it, and that led to a thread where I said, coincidentally Grinning

My posh new "working" laptop is so high-def that I have to smallen all my pics before they can be accepted - yet another delay.

It was EJ's return in 2018, and CC said "one day she won't return but it won't be this year"... but we didn't know what an awful year that would be, after one of the best homecoming views we'd ever seen Disappointed relievedDisappointed relievedDisappointed relieved

    But I digress!

16:11 Brodie landed... with nothing unless he had some dirt in one foot Angry  Asha complained, he stood around and then left and she resumed incubating.  There had been some heavy rain earlier.

  • This is just an incidental video from the morning, with Asha bringing in a clump while Brodie incubates:

  • Did I really say that? I guess I was waxing philosophical… But really I love your word “smallen” just like I like the rest of your English language usage!

Then I posted this shot of a headless almost-whopper incoming - so Brodie flew to fish source, caught fish, flew back, and ate head... in a little over 40 minutes?!

Here's the 16:11 incident, just to validate it:

    And here's his take-off:

And here's Asha taking off with the 16:54 fish:

Asha didn't bring back any fish, but some nest material - last changeover was 20:23:

  • Nice bottie on the takeoff! Kissing heartGrin

Looks like trout…how close is that fish farm?? (Ten minutes as the osprey flies?)
