Llyn Clywedog March - May 2023

Llyn Clywedog is a reservoir situated near the B4518 road north of Llanidloes, Powys, Mid Wales. The reservoir is owned and operated by Severn Trent Water, with oversight and regulation by Natural Resources Wales. A sailing club and a very active trout fishery operate on the reservoir. The fishery stock the lake with tens of thousands of trout every year.

In 2005 Natural Resources Wales erected an osprey platform; this was eventually occupied in 2014, and has been used every season since then.

In 2022 the unringed osprey known as Dylan returned to the nest for his seventh season as the resident male. Since 2020 the resident female has been Blue 5F(12) (known as Seren - Welsh for Star). She hatched in Rutland in 2012. Previously she had for several years been unsuccessful in attracting the sole attention of a male to a nest at Pont Croesor. The previous unringed female (Delyth) did not return in 2020, and Seren 5F replaced her.  In 2020 Dylan and 5F Seren fledged 3 male young, in 2021 (a cold and wet season) only one male fledged, and in 2022 one female and 2 males. 5F Seren has regularly been seen in Africa in winter for many years - she was last reported as seen in the Gambia on 1 February 2023.

In 2022 5F Seren returned to the nest on 26 March; Dylan arrived on 5 April, which is later than he arrived in previous years.

There is no visitor centre or facilities. The nest can be observed from a temporary hide in a layby off the minor road. There is a footpath close to the nest which is closed and blocked off during the nesting season.

The nest is looked after by the area NRW ranger John Williams; he has a blog on this link. There is a more comprehensive history of the site in his blog. John goes well beyond the call of duty to support the ospreys and ensure that the cameras are running etc.

There is an active Facebook group for the nest on this link. The group tries to record all fish deliveries which are collated for analysis.

There are 2 streaming cameras provided by Carnyx Wild. The  links for the live stream change every 12 hours, the latest can be seen on the playlist links below.

Camera 1 is a close-up of the nest. - playlist on this link

Camera 2 gives a wider view with two perches - playlist on this link This camera is not being transmitted at the moment due to condensation obscuring the view.

  • Seren received a lovely headless fish for lunch. Thank you Dylan she said! I do love to hear the females’ excited calls when fish is delivered.

  • Thank goodness someone is on the ball (Glider) - I can't access my recordings (screen captures) of this cam because, for no reason whatsoever, my internal network has cut off... again !!!

Here's a screenshot from rollback - a beautifully clear screen, as predicted by AG - and 5F Seren has been on the low perch since about 01:45 - a sign of an imminent event? Hugging

    See y'all later.

  • What a beautiful night shot Scylla.

She’s still there this morning with Dylan on the upper perch.

  • Dylan flew in to the nest @ 06:14, he flew away and back, down and up, until Seren invited him, it seemed:

    He's away somewhere now.

  • Mating on the high perch - heard and partially seen ;)))
  • Dylan's work 08-09:00  Astonished  Mostly lightweight stuff, including little footfuls of "dirt".

This was a spalt landing with tiny footfuls:

  • Super pics, Scylla! Oh my, those wing shots! Grinning

  • Dylan brought a nice fish to Seren at lunchtime.

She clattered him with it as she flew off the nest!
She returned to the upper perch to eat it and subsequently dropped it. John Williams/Clywedog heard it rattle off the pine marten protection cage as it fell to the ground.
Dylan was on the nest at the time, don’t know if he saw it but he heard it.

  • I just had to find out if Seren got another fish today.

She did!!! At 19.16 Dylan brought in a small live perch.
She grabbed it with her beak

     and never let go!
     Off Seren flew with it.

  • Thank you for super reporting yesterday, GLIDER !!!

    08 April

03:12 something brought Seren to the high perch, Dylan flew in to the nest soon after and checked over this side - nothing seen, he flew off but Seren remained.

Later, she was entertained for a short while by French (I'm only saying that because I thought I heard the word "soldat", it could be any language):

This is what caused me to reverse the names hitherto claimed:

Dylan stayed with Seren on the perch for a while, did some nestorising, flew off.

    Sunrise:

06:43 Seren descended and proceeded to wait for a reason to do something:

This was right on the join between two 1-hour screen-captures:

Both were in and out nestorising, then Dylan left the nest @ 07:39:47 and returned with breakfish (bit of a tiddler, but hey!) @ 07:43:32 - it didn't even look like a fish on fly-in, here is was on fly-out:

08:05 Seren flew in with a clump and Dylan pounced from the high perch before she could do anything with it Heart eyes

    He's flown, she's waiting again.
