Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey), 12 March 2023

HAPPY NEW WEEK!

The White Pelicans are back for their migration layover on their way to the Canadian breeding grounds. They always arrive here sometime between late February and early April. I think they wish they'd waited a little longer this year. They're huddled on an island in the lake waiting for the snow tonight!

Have a wonderful week, everyone!

  • Can't think where you are going and when LINDY. Hope you have a lovely time. You seem to have had more than your fair share of funerals recently.
  • The funeral went well. Although I'm always puzzled that so many of the mourners stay to chat next to the graveside in the rain and cold wind, in the wintry weather, after the ceremony is over, when only half an hour later they're all going to see each other again in the warmth of a nice room with hot coffee & alcohol on offer.

    Is it just me?

It's been a day of cold sleety rain and we have managed not to stand in any of the big puddles, after it rained all night again. Thank you, but you can stop raining now as the garden has had a good drink!

Yes, we are off to The Canaries again. Its been 3 years exactly since we were there supposedly for 3 weeks, but had to rush back home on one of the last flights available after only 6 days, due to the dreaded Virus suddenly taking hold in Europe. Scary times. We were lucky to find places on a flight to Newcastle, which isn't exactly on our doorstep, but we had to be grateful just to get back to the UK. The weather there looks good at the moment, which will please my OH as he just wants to sit with a book. I'm looking forward to walking on the beach, & having some meals out.
  • LINDY: I hope you have an easy journey and a lovely time. I felt bad for you when you had to cut your trip short last time. I hope this holiday is perfect!!! Tell us all about it when you return. Safe travels.
  • Lindybird: Have a super time. Was it AQ who reminded you to pack comfy shoes? That made me smile given your well known fondness for shoes but - really we haven't heard much about your footwear lately. How many pairs are going with you on vacation? :-) I must say the 'having some meals out' got my attention. Enjoy!
  • This morn I bussed to collect my 2 Library “Holds” plus 3 more. Then I queried my other “Hold” which some one was due to return a week ago. “Please can I change to one of those 14 copies available in other libraries?? Librarian is not sure. Then she says i am not next on the list anyway. She decides NOT to cancel that one but order another and for good measure she orders the Large Print version. I am surprised the system does not have apoplexy that I now have 3 copies of the same book on Hold. I wonder which copy gets here first!

My bus ride home was more interesting than usual. First I must explain this bus from the city calls into the Airport, winds its way through our suburb before ending at a shopping centre named Harbour Town; waits a while and returns to city same route. Two ladies got on at local shops and ask “Going to Glenelg?” No, says the driver, I am going to Harbour Town; you can change for Glenelg there. You should have been at the stop across the road.

Around in next street we pick up an elderly Indian couple who want to pay by credit card and are confused when told to use the machine halfway down the bus. Man fumbles his card, machine gives a beep and a burp, he shrugs and sits down opposite me. He asks me “Do I have to do that when I get off?” No. Around the corner nearing my stop and he asks “This is going to the Airport?” No, you were on wrong side of road. The driver chimes in and says they can catch bus back from Harbour Town. The driver is so busy talking that he sails past my stop. That's OK, I don't have so far to walk home! Then, around the corner comes the opposite-direction bus, drivers communicate, the couple get off, run across road to catch that bus back to Airport. Their lucky day.

  • List of shoes to follow - I haven't put them in the cases yet! But it's shocking how many pairs of glasses we have between us! I have a pair on my nose, and:

    I pair of "normal" sunglasses
1 pair of "over the top of your normal glasses" sunglasses
    1 pair of prescription sunglasses
1 pair of spare glasses, in case I break mine
1 pair of glasses for near vision, which I usually use for screen viewing.

    My OH now has:

    1 pair for driving
    1 pair for reading
    1 pair "normal" sunglasses
1 pair prescription for reading sunglasses !!!!!!!

Phew. Might leave one pair of mine at home....
  • Thanks for the good wishes for our hols. I'm spending today putting stuff ready to go, & cleaning bathrooms etc. My OH is waiting to hear if the golf course is closed after the never ending rain we've had.

AQ, you just came on with your bus story - at least its entertainment for your journey. Hope at least one of the books turns up!
  • Oh dear LINDA. What a dilemma. You may have to leave some shoes at home to fit all those glasses in.<big grin>
  • Lindy - suggest you save some space in the suitcase by wrapping the glasses with socks/undies and stuffing them into the shoes. Should give you plenty of space for any other essentials! :)
