MANTON BAY - MARCH/APRIL 2023

Brief history of Manton Bay:

The nest was first occupied by White 08(97) and Green 5N(04) in 2007 who raised 2 chicks.  In 2008 they paired again but the nest failed and in 2009 it was unused.   In 2010 a new pair, Green 5R(04) and an unringed female nicknamed Mrs 5R, took up residence and over the next four years raised 11 chicks.   Green 5R(04) failed to return in 2014 and Mrs 5R paired with a new mate, Blue 28(10) and laid 3 eggs.  Blue 33(11) arrived determined to claim this nest and evicted Blue 28(10).  Blue 33(11) kicked out the eggs and spent the remainder of the season bonding with Mrs 5R who was then officially named “Maya”.   Since 2015, Maya and Blue 33(11) have returned reuniting their partnership and to date have successfully raised 23 chicks.

Here’s wishing Maya and Blue 33(11) a safe journey home and for another successful season.

  • Thanks everyone for snaps, videos and posts. Saw the good news a bit before lunchtime and was scrolling back to see the action when interrupted. At 7:19 Bart posted (top of page 18) that there was a bit of a fight between 25 and Maya, but I never got that far and have only recently been able to look again, by which time it was too late. Anyone, Scylla perhaps?, have a video of that event, please? Thanks in advance. And now we just need 11 to appear somewhere, River Gwash perhaps.

Also, does anyone know if Maya ever had to fight for the nest before? I do not recall any fight in the time I have watched MB--I have watched from 2013. Maya/Mrs 5R has been breeding there from 2010, the year 25 hatched.

    Kind regards, Ann

I think Bart must have been referring to when Maya kicked Blue25 off the nest.  No, that was too early... There was a bit of conflict afterwards but that was the last actual contact they had... I think!

    Scylla perhaps?,

If I'd seen any more significant action I'd've included it in the video - it's too late for Recycle Bin, I can't keep stuff in it for long like I used to, even tho I've allocated loads of space - it's something Windows did some time ago. Frowning2

  • @GARDENBIRDER

(I had to edit that from CATLADY - sorry !!! )

However !!!  I forgot !!!  I did some duplicate downloads yesterday because of worries over drop-outs, and now I found an undeleted WIDE CAM 6-hour clip covering the period.

I may have missed out one of these 2 nest-splats, but you can see that there's nothing in the region of 07:19:

    20 March

Roughest-ever cut of flyins this morning, only one at a time - the second bird stayed in the end position looking down for a-g-e-s:

    Didn't leave until 04:53:

But I think the same bird is now back on the nest.

    G'night all.

Hi Gardenbirder, I took a couple of stills of B25 dive bombing Maya, same clip as Scylla’s video.

  • Morning ALL - thanks for all the updates

Maya wasn't on the nest much yesterday, but I've the feeling she was up on the perch.  But perhaps she hasn't yet forgiven 33 lol

    Some captures from earlier:

33 on the nest - stay for about an hour alone

05:51  Maya arrives - 33 at first mantles then mating

06:32  Both on the nest - looking quite soggy

07:28   After a spell of ENS, 33 returns

Hi Gardenbirder - I've followed the nest since 2014 and am not aware of Maya ever having to fight for the nest.   In 2009 the nest was unused and she arrived in 2010 pairing with 5R and has been the resident female since then.   Other Rutland females have visited the nest over the years -  5N and 25, also I think 30.

She only stayed a minute and flew off with it.   Unsure when it was delivered - my scroll back skills aren't great!!

Sadly, very busy today so wont be around much.   Catch up later   BFN

  • She brought it herself, but might have been caught by 33 and delivered off nest
  • Ah found the delivery !!
