Link to August 2022
With last year’s male LJ2 arriving on the 6th of April and partner LM6 the 10th of April, I thought I would start a thread now for the new season in case they return earlier after a successful breeding season last year. The nest and surrounding area has recently been prepared by Welsh Water for our pair’s arrival.
Background to the nest:-
Many thanks to AG who wrote this preface to the Llyn Brenig thread for us below. (I’ve just edited extra information)
Llyn Brenig is a reservoir on the border between Denbighshire and County Conwy in North Wales. It is managed by Welsh Water; the osprey project is a partnership between them and North Wales Wildlife Trust.
One pair of ospreys (Blue HR7 (M) 2014 Lake Menteith, Scotland and Blue 24 (F) 2010 nr Rutland) raised a single chick here each year from 2018-2020, Z9 (F) Luned, KA5 (M) Roli and KC5 (F) respectively. Sadly, KC5 died after fledging, colliding with a wind turbine.
Neither of this breeding pair returned in 2021, when the nest was taken over by 2 Scottish birds, LJ2 (male) and LM6 (female), both 2018 chicks. The nest was vandalised the night after LM6 had laid her first egg; while the two could not continue to breed they did stay close to the site until normal migration time.
A new nest was erected in 2022 with additional security and a streaming camera in place. A new hide was also built.
LJ2 and LM6 returned and successfully fledged 2 chicks, X6 Olwen (F) and KA9 Gelert (M)
LM6 lost her blue darvic ring on the nest. It was recently recovered by Welsh Water and kept for display in the exhibition later this year.

14.13 LM6 fish calling louder now.
14.14 LJ2 comes to the nest misjudging his landing and knocks LM6 over. Sounded like he clattered his wing tip on the cam post. tip
No fish though.
Nice to hear that Roli KA5(19) son of Blue24 and HR7 was seen at Glaslyn today 15.09.
Approximately 18.00 at last, a successful mating!
Now LJ2, go and get her a fish!
19.24, a fish (headless) finally comes to the nest. LM6 is screaming by this point!
However, LJ2 flies past the nest and comes round the back of the cam pole to land.
LM6 quickly meets him and grabs the fish in her beak. She then transfers to her left talon and takes off over the water.
She follows the shoreline, flying round to the right
and continues in that direction round the trees until she is out of sight.
Sunday 9th April
Good morning. 06.19 LJ2 is first on the nest. LM6 can be heard quietly greeting him as he flies down.
LM6 joins him at 06.30. LJ2 briefly goes to the rim, mantles then comes out of it.
06.55 LM6 hopefully asks for fish but its nesting materials LJ2 is carrying.
07.39 LM6 waiting on LJ2’s return, something has caught her eye down below. Look at her beautiful russet tones in the sunlight.
09.45 LJ2 is working so hard getting his nest ready. LM6 is giving him encouragement from the sidelines!
Both ospreys had been on the nest for a wee while just chillin’ and the occasional call for fish. LM6 flew to the perch.
A few minutes later, LJ2 flew over and had another successful mating with LM6. 12.17
Around 13.45 LM6 is on the nest and LJ2 on the tree in front. She calls
LJ2 comes flying down to the nest
And they mate successfully. It’s taken them a few days but they are back into the swing of things again.
15.45 both birds on the nest, LM6 wants fish. LJ2 seems to prefer fishing in the early evenings.
Sounds very blustery there today. 16.20 Both back on the nest. LJ2 has more DIY to do before going fishing.
