LOCH GARTEN - MARCH / APRIL 2022

All quiet on the Osprey front but all delighted to be able to watch the NEW nest on the NEW cam. Thanks to all for the hard work erecting / installing both. You derserve a sucessful breeding pair this year for your efforts.

Some people think Ospreys are a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.

  • I had hedged my bets and said today or tomorrow - just going by first mating and adding 10 to 12 days!  Nothing scientific.

11.49 Axel has left.  Mistle was calling from the nest cup, and watched him intently.  She occasionally looks at her talons - can she feel something odd going on!

    11.54  Mistle has flown.  ENS

  • Just to note, the bullfinch earlier was actually a male redstart, beautiful bird.
  • The matings on the 16th looked iffy with lots of falling off's etc, so my thinking was from the 17th at 11 days, I would have gone for 28th. That is my scientific workings out!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • 12.24 Mistle is joined by Axel, just to mate and fly.

  • 12.24pm, lots of shouting and nest cupping from Mistle, Axel, flew left, had a fly around and back to mate, he is now off, hopefully to get a FISH.

Must move myself and go and do some housework but will keep checking in, just in case!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • 12.33 Axel flew to the nest, with no mantling!!!  There were lovely contact calls

12.34 Mistle flew off to the Old tree to the left of the old cam tower, just out of sight.  Axel potters and nest cups, moves the large stick to block our view!

and then looks pleased with himself.  They are really beginning to settle down now.

  • Mistle has been calling from the 'forked' dead tree (out of sight) 12.50 Axel flew out to her, also out of sight

  • He's actually flown to here!

  • Well done CC!!  That's fabulous.  What amazing equipment you have!!  x  It's the lower branch from the nest where Odin used to hang out!

Mistle moved to within view, or perhaps she was there all the time and it was only when she flapped her wings I spotted her.  Red marked the spot

Axel landed and mated with her (more flapping wings).  He then flew off beyond the nest into the boggy area, but just disappeared.

Landed with a chirrup at 13.16 and started nestorising

13.20.19 Mistle flew off heading behind the nest and I lost her.

13.20.21 she returned to the current nest, and sadly Axel faux mantled again.

13.22.50 Axel flew off towards the old nest and beyond before I lost him again.  Mistle is attending to the soft furnishings!

13.29 Axel returns, Mistle solicits.  Mistle flies to the perch, still calling - dominant position!  Axel isn't relaxed yet, hunched a bit. 1

13.31.24. Ah, he flies up to the perch and fails to mate!  off he goes

  • And more mating on the perch! I am wondering if the faux mantling is more about demonstrating ownership of the nest with a mate than being coy or shy...just thinking out loud!
