OSPREY CHAT 2022 + ***CAM LINKS***

I'm starting this thread because the OP can be an easily-findable repository for information - eg, how to find current live streams - and it can be updated by me on behalf of myself or anyone else who instructs me to add or change something.

The rest of this thread can continue as the "normal" Osprey Chat thread we have every season.  OK?  I hope Purple heart

  • Geemeff, I fully I tended joining this zoom presentation, but when the time came, I forgot. However I think you or another person involved suggested it might be available to watch not long after. I haven't seen anything more or any obvious route to a link. Are you able to point me in the right direction? I am really interested in following the project, and to see which osprey are involved involved.

    Hi Sheila,

you can send an empty email with the subject 'add to mailing list' to office@conservation-without-borders.org

At the moment it looks like there will be four tagged Ospreys: Rutland's Blue 4k, and three yet to be tagged, probably from Tweed Valley. But things are changing all the time, so I'll be as interested as you to see what transpires.

I'm still working my way through emails, tweets and whatsapps after the launch of Thursday night, ithere may be a link to Monday's briefing in one of them. I'll return and post here when I get one.

    Hope that helps.

  • Gardenbirder:

Geemeff, Many thanks for the notice about the short Zoom meeting about the Flight of the Osprey. Mr GB and I watched it and I was glad to hear Sacha will not be flying as she did with the Swans and so we will not need to worry about the project on that account (don't want any more tragedies). I was amused and delighted to hear Sacha's description of how the idea of the project was first broached--it was while she was 'being flung around the dance floor by Roy Dennis' that he had asked her if she could do the same for Ospreys as she had done for Swans! Wonderful--I can just picture it! Also, I do hope that one or more of the folks involved in the project will be doing talks for various groups over the two years of the project, among others possibly to Local RSPB Groups as well as to other larger and smaller groups. Our Local RSPB Groups usually have events planned for a year ahead, but they would probably be happy to have a talk in year two of the FOTO project. Our local Wildlife Trust also offers occasional talks, and there is a small team at a Bird of Prey centre near us who do a regular Podcast, interviewing a wide range of folks involved in nature and its conservation (not only those involved with birds of prey but all of nature)--just a few suggestions.

Thank you, Gardenbirder,  I've just realised I didn't answer this bit. I've passed on your comments to the outreach team and left it with them. I'm sure outreach events will start being scheduled as August approaches. Now the project has been launched officially, and sponsors are coming on board, the details are being firmed up with plans being made, tweaked or discarded, and more plans being made. Anyone want to donate a couple of Land Rovers for the expedition team members who'll be driving the route?

Edit The mental picture of Sacha and Roy Dennis twirling around discussing Ospreys on the dance floor is a delicious one... I imagine those Jane Austen type dances where they meet up long enough to exchange a couple of words then step away again only to meet up and twirl before repeating the sequence.

  • Morning all, here's the link for the introductory briefing for the Flight of The Osprey (#FOTO) that was held last week, thank you to all who attended. And if anyone would still like to record their responses to two questions about your relationship with Ospreys, the link is below. Please don't leave comments here, leave them on the YouTube clips in the comments section, or email office@conservation-without-borders.org. You can use the same email address to sign up for newsletters and updates, send a blank email with 'add to mailing list' in the subject field. Many thanks.

  • Thanks GEEMEFF and ANN Looking forward to dollowing this Love the idea of RD and Sacha taking part in a "Jane Austen type dance" Was just sharing the image with somebody else
  • http://ukospreys.uk/ Anyone know how to contact them?

Two Darvic records to be changed

T7 Rutland 2016 is male not female (informed by River Gwash Ospreys, he's been photographed fishing there many times)

JJ2 Loch Arkaig 2019 is male not female (per photo of Feb 2022 sighting)

I still suspect JJ0 (Loch Arkaig 2019) is also male - wouldn't it be great to get a sighting of her / him too?!

  • I posted this on the LG Osprey thread but don't thnink this is appropriate and can't find another so sorry, haved started a new thread................

Question: Why did we see, particularly in the 1990's, different reactions from the resident pair of Ospreys to intruding Ospreys:

1, Alarm call and defending of the nest to chasing the intruder away.
2, No alarm call but an adult circling peacefully with the intruder until both disappeared.

A possible explanation is that in 2 the intruder was recognised as a chick from the nest frpm a previous year (probably male as they tend to return much closer to their natal nests to prevent in-breeding, rather than females than tend to disperse longer distances) BUT,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, when they fledged from the nest they were in juvenile plumage............. having returned at least 2 years later they would look - TO US ............. much more different!

Explanations for this beaviour VERY welcome!

Some people think Ospreys are a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.

  • Morning all, I'm looking for material for my next blog for #FOTO, and requesting your help. It's World PlasticBag-free day on 3rd July, and I'm looking for info on Osprey nests that have a lot of plastic brought back, incidents where adults and chicks have been entangled, and injured or killed by ingesting plastic. If you're able to provide links that would be most helpful, otherwise if you can give as much info as possible so I can research it please.

I aim to publish the blog at the end of this month - thanks in advance! You can leave comments on my Twitter account (https://twitter.com/geemeff) or on WWD/Osprey forum walkingwithdaddy.com/.../, or here if it's ok with Scylla who started this thread.

    Your input is much appreciated.
