GLASLYN OSPREYS - APRIL 2021 to end of FEB 2022

March thread.

This post updated 01 June

MrsG returned on the 25th of March and was joined by Aran on the 29th.

(The beginning of the reunion video is a must-see for all fans of MrsG - I'm posting it today 01 June, to remind us of a happy time before the tragedies of May 2021.)

The month of May brought unrelenting wind, rain and corvids, as well as persistent intruder KS8 (among others) - and Aran somehow injured his right wing, rendering him unable to fish.  Within a few days all the chicks had sickened and died.  It could hardly have been more stressful for MrsG and Aran, but they are recovering together while the caring Glaslyn team is supplying fish each night.

(The chicks' bodies have been removed from the nest by Aran and MrsG, so we shall never know the cause of their deaths.)

In the right margin of this page are links to Glaslyn's posts documenting the misfortunes on the nest.

  • That is indeed heartening. I was wondering how the 2 chicks had managed to survive. Good for Glaslyn. Such a difficult time
  • Wow, i didn't quite expect that to happen, but it's a positive. It must have been quite a dilemma about what to do. Like Korky I was wondering how the chicks were still alive.
Hopefully Aran will keep improving and he can return to fishing, and Mrs G keeps the crows away.
    Good luck to the chicks.

  • Very supportive of the actions BGGW have taken - well done them! Hopefully, Aran's condition continues to improve so that he can once again provide for his family.

Thanks Mike for posting the link to the update.
  • Just read the Glaslyn update & not at all surprised that they went for supplemenrary feeding, the only humane option IMHO!

  • I know that better qualified people than me have looked at Aran's wing, and say it will recover, but watching that short video clip it doesn't look right at all.

  • Thank you for the link Mike. So many hurdles ahead but they are giving them all a fighting chance.
  • Thanks everyone, for pics and posts--I've only been dipping in to some of these RSPB threads for a few days, being engrossed in the dramas at Dyfi and Glaslyn in between dealing with a couple of health issues in the family (conclusion is that all is well there, apparently--or so they say!). Great news that Glaslyn have provided fish for the Ospreys and sounds like they plan to carry on for as long as it is needed which is great news, too. I had wondered if they might consult with Tim. I remember reading somewhere about an incident at Rutland some years ago when the famous Mr Rutland was unable to go fishing (I've forgotten if he was injured or ill, sorry) and somehow Rutland provided the family with fish until Mr Rutland recovered enough to go back to fishing. Fingers crossed that the outcome with Aran is the same.

Mike, Thanks, but it was not me who asked about the missing script--think it was Kate, but never mind!

    Kind regards, Ann

  • Thanks for the link to the update MIKE Have checked several times a day for news and dreading what it would be I wondered whether fish being provided was an option and so happy and gratified that they went for it Good Luck to them all, both bird and human Makes me feel more hopeful
I started following the ospreys online in 2011 so I think it was before that that Odin got fishing line caught around his leg and coyldn't fish and so it was provided....from Tesco's! I'm sure TIGER will remember the details
  • Patily, I recall the famous photo with the fish being placed on the nest from a Tesco bag!
  • Hithere MIKE That's what a remember too There might even have been a short video Do you remember how Odin managed to extricate himself from the fishing line?
