Weekly Chat, Sunday October 10, 2010

In the absence of Annette it falls to me to start the new weekly thread.  Continuing from  Weeky Chat, Sunday 3rd October 2010

I hope you all have a great week and no doubt we should welcome back Annette before the end of it. Hopefully the other holidaymakers will reappear too. It is so hard to keep track of but if memory serves me right both OG and Alicat are also on holiday.  A birthday coming up on Saturday (16th)  too :)

  • We did not stay to see who won. Tam Gormley went out in the second round so after that we decided it was not important who won and just enjoyed the competition. I do know that the Mexicans did well and Elvis but not a good day for super heros:

  • Hello all- Thank you everyone for all your posts etc, great to see you again, Alan.

Another nice day here, we have removed all the remaining bunches of ripe grapes from the vine ( about forty)  and sent them to a friend of SiL#1 who makes wine. OH has now pruned said vine, it looks rather bare now.  OH had a couple of good days on the river, caught three salmon but returned them, hen fish. He saw three red kites overhead yesterday, one had 'something' but dropped it. The ghillie and OH decided that it was maybe parents teaching a youngster how to catch?????

As for me, well, I have completely lost the plot. Being away for three days last week has wrecked my internalised calendar. My eldest son has a birthday on Tuseday - if he gets the card it will be a miracle. Eldest grandchild has a birthday on Wednesday and they are away on a mini break, should have sent card and gift in advance but forgot------ Oh dear.

Take care all, enjoyed all your pics. My challenge this winter is to post some photos.

Tiger, thanks for the link to the old Osprey. I seem to recall that Marge is older than that?

Marge first appeared at Loch of The Lowes in 1991. Now if she was say 3 years old then that made her hatch in 1988 or so. So Marge is probably around 22 or 23 years old. I am afraid some publications have talked up her age.

The nesting history of Marge is given on page 33 of "Life of Ospreys" with a lovely picture of a bird I take to be Eric on page 32.

On page 110 of "Life of Ospreys"  Roy Dennis recounts that the longest time he has known a pair for is 22 years in which the male bird had been breeding in the same locality (two different nests) for 25 years. So he must have been at least 28 years old while the female had been breeding for 22 years and must have been at least 25 years old.

I am pretty certain those are not world records. So Marge has to do a few more seasons before she into the record books for longevity. Mind you Marge is possibly a record holder for the number of chicks mothered.

On page 122 of "Life of Ospreys" Roy Dennis reconts the story of  'Red Z'   She was ringed as a chick in 1974. She became entangled in baler twine in 1982 and Roy trapped her in order to relieve her of the baler twine. She then came back for a further 15 years rearing a total of 32 osprey chicks. When she did not return in 1998 her place was taken by 'orange Z'

All in all this is a fascinating story and there is a lot more of it.

I guess most people on here have "Life of Ospreys" by now.

  • No wonder the official appears confused:

Elvis takes on one of the pirates of the Caribbean:

  • Gary   That bear group is incredibly passionate. When Hope was found I tried to navigate back a few hours just to see the announcement. It proved impossible since there were just too many posts.

ChloeB   Love the montage of your cats. It reminds me of he montage you did to solve the 'Mystery of the missing egg'.

Much mathematics was applied to find out which was missing. Then ChloeB apllied a bit of photography and came up with an equivalent solution. Of course if that egg had not gone missing, I very much doubt that Flag the chick that came from the fourth egg would ever have survived in a never to be forgotten drama.

  • Thanks Tiger and very true regarding the missing egg. Flag had a hard enough time being the third chick didn't he?

  • Alan, fantastic pictures and love the commentary from you. Such fun.

    Chloe, your cats are adorable:))

Heather, I'm sure you'll back to normal soon. With your SIl coming back, everything's taken a back seat I'm sure.

Tiger , thanks for the info re Marge. I knew you would know! I should have turned to my Roy Dennis book sooner. I remember you telling us the saga of Flag, posting the clip of him getting the older one in trouble and then your understated "Flag has fledged" lol
