Weekly Chat, Sunday October 10, 2010

In the absence of Annette it falls to me to start the new weekly thread.  Continuing from  Weeky Chat, Sunday 3rd October 2010

I hope you all have a great week and no doubt we should welcome back Annette before the end of it. Hopefully the other holidaymakers will reappear too. It is so hard to keep track of but if memory serves me right both OG and Alicat are also on holiday.  A birthday coming up on Saturday (16th)  too :)

  • Afternoon all,

Forget The World Cup, forget the Commonwealth games, forget Ola and Gollum in Strictly, this is what competion is really about:

Yes you have guessed it , just got back from the World Conker Championships held in a field between Ashton and Polebrook. What a fantastic day for the event. The opening ceremony was preceeded by a performance by the Peterborough Samba Band. Here are some pics of the opening ceremony:

1 . The parade of the flags of the nations taking part:

    2. Last years champion Tam Gormley with the Saltire:

    3. The MC is about to start the Championships at exactly 10:30 Ashton Time:

  • Alan nice to see you back. There was a report on the radio that the conker championships were in jeopardy as there was a shortage of conkers. the weather here has been dreich I haven't seen the sun since Thursday and on Friday you couldn't see more than a hundred yards. Yesterday took SiL to pick a new stair carpet and then we had lunch at Jamestown farm at Newburgh going on to Vane for some more fat balls.

The pictures I posted earlier were taken from the path that separates Lundin Links golf course from Scoonie Leven golf course. The power station in the photograph is now obsolete as it used to burn the slurry that was produced when the coal was washed but now there aren't any pits left in the area. The wind turbine that you see is where they make parts for the wind turbines. This picture is looking to wards Largo Law which is a extinct volcano

  • I just found this note on the Rutland site.

On 15/3/2000 an Osprey with ring number M9976 was found electrocuted near Agadir in Morocco. It had been ringed as a chick in Scotland on 20/7/1974 so was over 25 years old - a new longevity record for Ospreys. See   this page.

I am pretty ceratin that record has been surpassed now.

  • Do you know who Stanley Green was? Well you probably did if you ever visited Oxford Street in days gone by. He marched up and down Oxford street urging you to avoid passion and to do so by avoiding certain foods. I always felt tempted to go up and copy down the list but never felt brave enough to do so.

Apparently sitting was discouraged as well as nuts. Whether you could sit on your nuts I am not sure! :)

He used to offer a leaflet for sale. I think  it started at about 7p but he ravages of inflation eventually took it up to 12p.

  • Talking about nuts. Here is one of David Camerons schoolboy chums about to be beaten by another Mexican at the WCC:

  • Colourful pics of the World C. C., Alan.  See you also had nice sunshine today.  We fell asleep after all our exertions this morning, and then took up our shears & clippers again for an hour this afternoon- a much tidier garden now.

Yesterday journeyed south to visit Youngest Son & Wife, also took with us Dog and Eldest Son.  The Bump is now very large on a tiny girl, who is bearing it bravely. I felt the baby kicking!  He/she is going to be a lively one.   They have decorated a lovely Nursery ready for his/her arrival.  We all shared a large Takeaway Chinese meal and a huge apple pie which I took with me.

You haven't even made the 'shroom tea yet and you now at the nuts! :)

  • Alan, fab pictures, thanks so much. Is there a winner yet? Great that you went there. What a hoot!

George, sounds a nice day yesterday. Thanks for the lovely photo's

Linda, is the bump due soon?

Tiger/Chloe, any more nuts talk and we'll swing into all the “nuts” jokes! lol
