Daily Update (LG Nest) Tuesday 24th August

Hi,  it was a day of  misery for the two chicks. With EJ gone and it looks like Odin has gone too, there were no deliveries of fish yesterday.

Nature is playing its part. It is time the two juves went fishing for themselves or else start on their migratory journey.  Odin has obviously felt it is time to kick start these two into foraging for themselves. If confirmed he is gone by the LG team it will be about the same time as last year.

The weather sounds foul at LG at the moment so hope they are sheltering safely somewhere.

Only time and a new day will tell us what is happening.

Over to the early morning team and thanks to all of you in California, Australia, Finland, and elsewhere for keeping us updated.

Diane, thank you for kind comment.......I was keen to get the #1 migration and last sightings dates as accurate as possible.

Yes a great job indeed JSB and thank you, So, comprehensive. (but as you know, I cannot agree with you about Eldest's departure).

  • Question is, where is C1 how?  Has he found the same sturgeon farm as Rothes did or is he  relaxing somewhere in the south of England. I guess we will never know.

One think is clear and that is EJ has a completely different attitude to us. She delivers two fish to the bairns and is gone and may never see them again! Off she goes.

  • Morning, All.  EN at present, and water dripping so may be raining gently.  Just off to read back on the comments.....

  • There is no doubt that we should not see these birds in 'human' terms.  EJ & Odin give their offspring the best possible start in life, but after that, they are literally on their own - come what may.  We humans are used to nurturing our young for many years until adulthood, and then as has been said on here recently, still worry about them over 30 + years later!

I'm sure All will be Well once they realise that they just have to head south now, on their own personal Great Adventure.

  • Cirrus: I have been reading the blogs throughout.......but, amongst the many comments, I don't recall them all! I want to get it right, so can you explain please. I am quoting LG's answer to my direct question about #1's departure, presently.

Talking of food, as I was, my laptop was threatening hibernation, unless I found an electric socket.

  • JSB   I know Cirrus will answer for herself but I think she is talking about that picture she posted on 17th August which she reckoned was C1. It was discussed a few days ago and the community did not agree as far as I remember.

  • I remember that....we may have to take the LG official date....but, let us see what Cirrus says....it may not be an exact scence in this case and down to the dreaded identification.

And you must do that JSB -  otherwise you'll have so much flack thrown your way LoL  :)  . But, there just are no 'degrees' in observing  and many at the centre (the volunteers I would think) were ''nervous'' about saying which bird or birds were on the nest.   I just happened to be watching early that morning when Eldest came to the nest - strode around it calling for a fish ( and the ''voice'' can  be as distinctive as the bird)  until EJ came with a  fish which he flew off with.  How sensible to set off on a full stomach   :)

But as no 'expert' I don't expect anyone to believe me  - you look at one ''still'' image captured (and had I known I wouldn't be seeing this bird again I'd have snapped as many as I could !!) and many say ''that could be any of the three''  .  Next year I intend to make sure I too can make a video - this would have corroborated my observation.

We both have no choice here JSB - you've done a STERLING job . It's just that I know what I saw. How I wish someone else had been there that few minutes watching, sigh.

  • Oh, all that has made me forget my question  Lol- yes,er....  I can see Middle youngster has  paid a visit to the nest. Has Youngest been around at all? A bird just landed on the nest but I only saw its tail

  • One lesson I have taught over and over again is "report what you see"  and please do not be afraid to be wrong! We are all wrong sooner or later. We can always modify our beliefs in the light of new evidence.

In the days when I made genuinely new chemical substances I had to measure the properties and report them. There were no right answers as the substances were unkown and one could not look up the answers. I was always pleased to discover that when people later repeated my work they got the same results.

I am suspicious that Odin was gone before Sunday. But then I was not at Loch Garten to see him! :)
