Daily Update (LG Nest) Monday 23rd August

Hi folks,

Wasn't around for most of the day but found out I hadn't missed much. Just two hungry osps waiting all day for a meal which never came.  Thanks to you all for your posts and pics yesterday.

It looks increasingly likely that EJ has begun her migration as she has not been seen since early on Saturday morning according to official sources.

Time is running out for us all for this year, I wonder how many more days before Odin leaves and then the juves will have to go if they are to survive and learn to fish on their way to fresh pastures new....sighhhhhhhhhh

Over to the early morning crew - keep us going.   Night, Night.

  • One chick just flew off the camera post and into the woods at 8:49.

Barbara Jean, I can't agree more with you. I have always thought the male stays until he can see that the chicks have learned to fish for themselves (so RSPB and other wildlife sites say) he did the same last year and left two chicks to fend for themselves. Poor Mallachie was left on her own calling for a few day's!!  It was sad to watch!  :-(

If nothing goes right, go left! :-)

  • I find this hard, have decided not to watch but will read what you all post. Sorry, I'm a wimp----

  • Heather, you are not a wimp!!!  We all feel the same way as you do, upset and tearful!!

The chicks have been on and off the nest all day calling for food, it has been heartbreaking to watch!

Nothing for you to feel sorry for, we are all with you!! :-)

If nothing goes right, go left! :-)

  • Hi all, back on again and catching up.   Thanks for the up to date stats jsb, I've saved them in Windows 7.

As to reading the updates, Im afraid I can't agree that Odin was not magnificent.   He has been a super husband and father and is teaching his young to start to fend for themselves.

We should all rejoice that these two juves, however painful it looks, are being taught the first lesson in survival and hopefully they will learn quickly that to survive they must start to fish.

I think Odin has decided to leave for the simple fact that these youngsters were becoming too dependant on dad's and mum's fish that they brought in and thought it an easy option.

I'm sorry if I offend anyone but this is nature in the raw and there is always something to learn about the behaviour of these magnificent birds.  Now, I'll stop prattling on and hope and pray that they will either leave tomorrow or go fishing for themselves now that they have been over 24 hrs without food.

  • Strange light appeared as though it was a torch and it is chucking it down. Hopefully it was another car on the bend in the road.

Thanks Tiger and Cirrus. She has left 5 day's earlier than last year then. Was it Mallachie (my favourite) and Garten thas was left?

Garten  was last seen at 8.30pm on 26th August 2009.  EJ was last seen at 8am on 27th August. 2009. Thus Garten probably left at around the same time as EJ.

[/quote] Tiger, looking at those stats, it appears Odin has left about the same time as last year, probably instinct has kicked in this year.  Now leaving the chicks to fend for themselves or start their migration, which makes sense, however upsetting it is for some of the viewers.

  • I tend to agree with Lynette. These 2 juveniles are well enough advanced to fish for themselves now. Odin and EJ could provide fish for them until the end of October and they still would not fish for themselves. Odin did what needed to be done and withdrew his supply.

Thanks for that, Lynette. I agree totally with what you say. The two youngsters will be fine - this is just the shock they need for their innate abilities to kick in.

  • Thanks Alan and Sandy for your support.

It is nature after all and sometimes we get too carried away and forget that!!!!

Oh dear, the rain is really falling, do hope they are sheltering safely until the morning.

BarbaraJean - surely Mallaclhie could not have flown 3000 plus miles without any food on the way.? Her long stop in Portugal honed her fishing skills I'm sure .
