Weekly Chat, Sunday August 15, 2010

Evening all: Just started this one; now back to check on latest posts on previous week's thread.

  • OG - Re beets, I have roasted small ones for eating that day,  but generally have boiled them in time honoured smelly fashion. Will be interested to hear if anyone has a different method. We can only grow in containers but had our own runner beans and carrots this evening.

  • Hello again, little granddaughter has to appear at hospital at 8.30 tomorrow morning for decision re arm. Although it is very swollen she has been a real trooper, must have a much higher pain threshold than her Nana----- Appparently at the dinner table this evening she said 'Just LOOK at the size of my arm!!!'. Her main concern is that she starts school for the first time on Tuesday (Scottish schools go back earlier than English) and isn't sure how she will manage to pull her pants up if she has to use the loo! Poor wee soul. We have reassured her as best we can---:-)

I'm off to keep date with book and bed. Night all.

  • Heather - thanks re Beets - have just peeled them - they smell much nicer now, and I have pink hands!  Congrats on the home-grown veg - garden to steamer to plate to mouth, with no time to lose flavour or goodness!

That poor wee girl must be in a lot of pain, but she is certainly very brave.  It sounds like it needs a plaster to fully immobilise it - but that could mean a replacement plaster when the swelling decreases.  If it is plastered, I would think she'll be regarded as the class heroine when she goes to school on Tuesday - but isn't it funny what things worry their minds?  Actually, I remember having a hand immobilised when I was 19 and wondering how I would manage the loo!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

Help please (off topic). Google doesn’t help if one doesn’t have the name!!! Can anyone identify this Scottish bridge which I saw in June 2005? My 2 pics of this bridge were between photos taken in Callander and Melrose. Not very helpful, I know. I left Callander in morning by car. I think my route went towards Doune, A84, M9, A720, A7, visited Galashiels, ending day in Melrose. Well, it surely wasn’t on the M9 or A720!!!

The bridge was on the right side of the road, below a layby with a sign-board. I noted info but later couldn’t find my notes. Grr. I think the bridge was over an old canal (not sure). And I think there was a church among trees on a hill behind me. I was then using a film camera hence no time recorded to guess how far I had travelled. I’ve tried "driving" with Google maps without success. Any suggestions welcome.

AQ:  I thought I'd found your bridge until I came back on here to post a link.  The terrain in the photo I found is completely different, but it's a similar style of bridge.  I'll still post the link, and continue looking for you. ;-)

Oh Heather – my heart sinks for you. I desperately don’t want to be in the position of ALWAYS needing a dressing gown. My back living room in the summer is protected by trees – mine and the neighbour’s at the ‘bottom of my garden’ so that I look like I live in a wood not suburbia. The thought of not being able to slip into the kitchen in bra and knics to make a quick coffee is unbearable.  Fingers crossed for your GD – what a brave soul she is to be sure. On an entirely different note:   herrings in oatmeal!!   ??? well, erm …..  well !

Thank you OG – late Sunday pm there was a sort of ‘show down’ with my neighbour (her not him- dunno where he is at the moment !) and his parents. The three talking to me as I was trying to enjoy a read on my patio standing on the ‘struts’ of their decking.  I felt at a definite disadvantage (3 to 1) as they were all trying to persuade of their ‘good’ intentions and not intrusive intentions.  I still intend to talk to the Council in case they are not as good as their word but they did tell me they would do something about ‘fencing’ to assure privacy – theirs and mine. It’s just so close though!!  But I’m just hoping it will be a win/win situation. I don’t want bad feeling for ever and a day. My how industrious you are OG  -  planning autumn dates, boiling beets, making  birthday cards  …..  I feel a sloth.

My goodness me Margo what a dreadful time you’ve had. I do hope you can just relax today and treat yourself to something ‘gentle’ to eat that you can hold down.

Annette, I’m pleased you’ll soon have all your family in their right places but do trust all that driving isn’t too stressful.

Dibnlib -  20 lengths sounds amazing to me. So well done! I doubt I could do more than 1. But I don’t think EJ will go tomorrow unless the weather is really good with a north –ish wind to push her from behind. What a wonderful cruise you had in 2000! Oh, and thank you for correcting my spelling of dreich.

Alan – I had to chuckle looking at the corn growing in the nest.

Well done Lindy on spotting all nine parrots. I love sweet peas – so fragrant. Do tell us what holiday you choose.

  • To bridge researchers, Heather's OH, OG & Wattle - Thank you for trying. I have to bow my head in shame as I got my holidays mixed. Just in case the bridge has since disappeared like Brigadoon, it was actually my 2002 visit. Now I have a digital camera I photo all sign boards. This isn't always productive! Last trip to Kincraig Wildlife Park I snapped the sign "European Elk", drove on . . .  but never saw any!!!

Last night's David A program on Fish was not preceded by a warning!!! Yet there they were, sailfish herding and scoffing sardines. Don't fish raise touchy-feely emotions in humans? Only mammals, reptiles, insects. Or did the TV channel just forget to warn scaredy-cat viewers.

EDIT Wattle - I had a lovely time looking at all the associated pics with your bridge. Thank you.

  • Evening/morning all:  Marvellous underwater shots of humpbacks demolishing in one mouthful a bait ball of herring that gulls and diving birds had corraled and were feeding on.   Anyway, just finished going through three boxes of ancient discs, pens, pencils - we could open an office supply store museum.

dibnlib:  How nice that you've seen Alaska; I'm still puttering about in California. They say the best way to see Alaska these days is on a small ship that can get into the harbors that can't accept the large liners, which have become more prevalent and unfortunately overwhelmed some communities, turning them into crowded tourist towns full of souvenir shops, etc..

Lindybird:  A Cuban Whistling Duck - do they whistle with a Latin beat?

Heather: Time to get that sign out and go picket Orange's office (call evening news folks first though).  Herrings in oatmeal!?  Good grief. Sounds positively - um - fishy.   Hope granddaughter's arm isn't too bad - they heal very quickly at that age! But oh dear, to be anxious about using the loo....poor little sweetie. Then again, as OG says, she'd be the center of attention at school!

OG:   Our family birthdays are in February/March and September/October. You can't turn around during those months without sending a card to someone somewhere.  Went to rose garden again this afternoon - was so successful in relaxing there yesterday. If I sit in the garden at home I eventually jump up to do something or other.  Sprawled on the grass again and read and  watched visitors admire the roses. Never gets crowded up there even though the Mission area is the tourist attraction in Santa Barbara.  Daughter called this afternoon and she too is looking forward to coming home. Granddaughter's situation still in flux.

Cirrus:  Oh dear, nothing like interrupting you reading to convince you that they don't want to intrude on you!  Tuesday will be a bit hectic, but house is clean, groceries are in, plants are watered, so all I have to do is drive and give hugs!

AQ: Maybe the David A program was the same as the DVD I watched this evening - lots of herrings off - um - Africa?

Up late tonight since have annual medical in a few weeks and have to do the fasting blood test business first thing. Off now to fill up with granola and something else so I'm not starving when I wake up.  Take care all.

  • Morning All:   Happy Monday!

Annette:   I hate that fasting business, it makes me really ratty when I can't even have a cup of tea first thing. I'm not at my best 1st thing anyway, takes me ages to get going in the mornings.

Here is the 'Monday Smile' for this week:

QUESTIONS FOR THE OVER 50's :

How can you avoid the terrible curse of elderly wrinkles?   -   Ans:  Take off your glasses.... you will look a lot better in the mirror....

As people age, do they sleep more soundly?   -   Ans:   Yes, but usually in the afternoons!

Most  common remark made by 50+ yr olds when entering an Antiques Shop?:    "Gosh, I remember those!"

Where should you look for your reading glasses when you can't find them?  -  Ans:  On your forehead.

Off to feed the Washing Machine, so it can then spout out more damp clothes for me to dry & iron    :-(

  • AQ – we were both sitting here researching your bridge – with some clues from your photo and some local knowledge – and clever OH found it for you!  It spans Gala Water at Stow.

At the moment, I can't make the hyperlinks he gave me work for you, so will come back later!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Good Morning to you ALL. Dry but windy here this morning. It felt quite cool when getting up this morning.

Heather, I hope your GD gets satisfactory results today. I can remember my daughter breaking her arm and she thoroughly enjoyed the attention she got from her school friends.

Cirrus, In a previous house, our then neighbours wanted to build a large raised conservatory, adjoining our fence, to improve their sea views, but meant we had no privacy in our garden, so reluctantly we objected to the planning office and much to our relief, we won. They still spoke to us, as I think they knew how unreasonable they were being, but were hoping we would keep quiet. I hope it all works out in your favour.

Margo, Really do hope you are feeling much better today.

Linda, We are also hoping to book a holiday. Just hoping life quietens down and we can think of ourselves for a time. Hope you have found your ideal break.

OG, You sound very busy recently. I was just looking at our 'card list' and see that Feb/ Mar/ April is our busiest time for cards. The list increased as the great nieces and nephews arrived.

Annette, Great to hear you are finding time to relax and now counting the hours to OH's return home. I hope GD's problem is soon settled.

The Doctor's think that S-i-L is very anxious and therefore preventing her ' inners' from functioning. She needs to walk but Physio. is having trouble getting her to do any exercises. She is normally a very strong character.

I need to go, but will try and chat later.
