Evening all: Just started this one; now back to check on latest posts on previous week's thread.
Oh darn. Just lost my responses again - not the computer this time, but me. I've got one eye on a wonderful BBC Earth documentary with David Attenborough on the Arctic (looks marvellous on the flat-screen telly!) and clicked on the wrong "refresh" button.
Did read all the latest posts and Heather, hope your grandddaughter has had her X-ray by now and hasn't broken anything. Wattle: What lovely birds to have outside your window. Alan: Those little finches are extraordinary - wonder what the evolutionary reason was for all those colors. Lindybird: Good to see you again; ditto Chrissy B (I like thick creamy porridge); OG: Congrats on the reorganized kitchen. Hallo to all I missed!
Was so nice to see OH on Skype this morning; he looked so happy to be at my sister's. I woke up Lightning to say hallo to him but she was cranky and jumped into her bed and went back to sleep! I spent a few hours at the rose garden this afternoon - didn't do any work, took a good book and a blanket and chair and lolled on the grass in the shade. Lots of people strolling with kiddies/dogs, etc., and of course, the lovely roses. Was very relaxing.
Off to watch rest of this lovely program. Currently showing guillemot chicks taking their first dives off a cliff face with their Dads following right behind - wonderful footage! Oh my, one little one didn't make it into the water and bounced along the shore - aaack! another one got caught by a fox. Oh dear. Must go. Have a nice Sunday all.
Second part of this DVD is focusing on the salmon migration in the Pacific Northwest and includes amazing photos of Bald Eagles fishing for salmon. The concentration and focus as they fly in for the kill is quite compelling. Also very amusing shot of a young grizzly on the bank of a river trying to catch salmon as they climb the rapids - one salmon leapt out of the water and managed to smack a bear on the side of the head on its way upriver. Bear didn't know what hit it!
This DVD comes in two parts: Title (at least in the States) is Nature's Most Amazing Events: Diane: You may have seen the original programs on the Discovery Channel (I didn't). I got them from Netflix. The last few minutes of the first DVD shows how the camera crew managed to get the underwater shots of the grizzlies catching salmon. It's interesting when you've seen the documentary Grizzly Man....
OK Wattle, I see 7, no 8, no count ‘em again, 7. . . I’m sure some have flown away while I am counting. LOL
Annette - We have another of "Life" narrated by David Attenborough tonight. Fish this week. Nature docu’s are now introduced with the words "The following program contains animals eating and preying in the wild". Duh. Well, of course, or it wouldn’t be natural.
TerryM - I have noted B&B in case I ever get back to Scotland. Thank you.
Margobird & all sick & injured. I hope you are feeling better. Sorry, I’ve missed 2 days, had to speed read & forgotten who’s doing what already.
I didn’t forget anything for last night’s meal for Dau#1 & appendages, unless you count me forgetting broccoli was done while attacking (aka carving) roast. (Wasn’t carving a man’s task in ye olden days?) The Whoopie pies were popular. G-son took the recipe & plans to take them in his lunchbox. Miss14 avoided them ‘cos I couldn’t find Free Trade chocolate. However she & others loved Diane’s cinnamon pumpkin bars. Except Himself. He heard what they contained and reckons he doesn’t like pumpkin. (How does he know?) Miss14 asked for that recipe. She & Himself wiped the dishes, then we played cards. Some new game - it seemed very complicated or was that the red wine . . . Later today Dau#2 is dropping in to replenish her reading matter from "my" library. It’s great we have the same taste. Well, it’s 3 pm and time to wander over to Daily to watch ENS or listen to screechers.
AQ: That's hysterical!! Warning viewers that nature programs contain scenes of Actual Nature! We aren't that nannyfied as yet! :-)) Congratulations on cooking Diane's pumpkin treats.
Annette - We have all these warnings about sex, violence, adult themes. And of course others warning aboriginals that images of dead people may be shown. Even the newsreader warns that the following item "contains images that may be distressing to some viewers". What distresses me are the SHOUTING repetitive adverts. Oh, and the programs that start later than advertised time, regularly 10-15 mins late. I should have said RANT ALERT !!!!!
Help please (off topic). Google doesn’t help if one doesn’t have the name!!! Can anyone identify this Scottish bridge which I saw in June 2005? My 2 pics of this bridge were between photos taken in Callander and Melrose. Not very helpful, I know. I left Callander in morning by car. I think my route went towards Doune, A84, M9, A720, A7, visited Galashiels, ending day in Melrose. Well, it surely wasn’t on the M9 or A720!!!
The bridge was on the right side of the road, below a layby with a sign-board. I noted info but later couldn’t find my notes. Grr. I think the bridge was over an old canal (not sure). And I think there was a church among trees on a hill behind me. I was then using a film camera hence no time recorded to guess how far I had travelled. I’ve tried "driving" with Google maps without success. Any suggestions welcome.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
Hello Everyone I so hope all of you that are ailing are truly feeling much better. I'm not sure if Diane's shoulder is that kind of ailment but I'd like to think so.
What a super bridge AQ! I hope you get your answer. I'm not around much today either although I'll be 'catchiing' up at some point in the afternoon.
Meanwhile I too have a question if any UK Brit is able to help me. I have a major upset with my new neighbours building outrageously invasive decking at the same height as my raised patio and such a length that will enable them to 'sit in the sun' and look directly into my living room. I am imagining all the relatives arriving for a picnic lunch !!!!!!!!!!!!! Does anyone know if planning permission is needed for such a structure? Had they built on the ground it would have been at garden level and not a problem. I can't phone the Council until tomorrow by which they may have finished the work. I've written a letter which I will deliver today (the couple seem to be away but his father is the builder). To say I am upset is an understatement.
