August is the month when we've seen the Loch Arkaig ospreys depart on their journey south. We've enjoyed watching them this year - the wonderful parenting skills of Aila and Louis, and the antics of their 3 chicks, Captain, Vera and Doddie.
Mary GK did an absolutely wonderful video summarising the 2020 season. Thank you so much Mary! And here is Geemeff's great compilation, thank you!
2020 last dates:
Doddie JJ6 was last seen at the nest on Saturday 15th August 2020
Aila was last seen on Saturday 22nd August 2020
Captain JJ7 was last seen on Sunday 23rd August 2020
Vera JJ8 was last seen on Saturday 5 September.
An unidentified osprey was seen off camera on Sunday 6 September eating a fish. This could well have been Louis, having arrived and found no Vera around to feed.
Doddie JJ6 was videod and photographed fishing for over a fortnight at Avalon Marshes in Somerset

JJ8 has been in and out on the nest this morning since around 05.56 ish..... then JJ7 landed on the nest followed by JJ8 who flapped him off the nest, she is still there calling.

When i looked in both birds were making a racket It seemed a combination of an intruder and JJ9 defending jer large fish
Then she started to eat amd Ihave left her to it, not being able to watch anymore as it was clear the poor fish wasstill alive

07.37, JJ8 is on the nest as Louis brings in a nice fish. JJ7 arrives just a bit late so JJ8 claims the fish. 07.42, JJ8 flaps JJ7 off the nest. My input will be sporadic today, it will still be better than the no input of yesterday! Ian
Delivery
Terrible picture of JJ8 flapping JJ7 away

Video of the 07.37 Fish Delivery - I see poor JJ7 got flapped off the nest again..... the fish was live too (not for the squeamish)...
08..34.23, JJ8 flies from the nest with the fish. She is visible all the way down the glen, she turns right then wheels round to the left and can be seen heading off screen to the left. With my basic understanding of the layout of the area, she will have been flying over the loch as she went from right to left. It would make a good video (hint, hint) Meanwhile JJ7 has returned and this time finds a bit of fish. Ian
MaryGK said:It is one of the wonders of Osprey watching isn't it, when we get news of an Osprey turning up that we were sure was long gone.
Indeed Mary. One of my favourites was Rothiemurchus who was MIA for 3 years. Seen in Africa in November 2014, then nothing until seen there again in December 2017. But I'm not sure he's been seen here since.
JJ7 hunting for a snackette. Gonna miss that screeching noise.....

Korky he found a snackette (love it) a tiny wee piece lying on the nest.
Oh Yes Rothiemuchus Blue AE is a favourite of mine too, I will never forget Joanna's message to me saying they had found him, tears of joy!
Ian I will take the hint You get three for the price of one Ian. JJ8's lovely fly away - JJ7 finding a scrap, and JJ8 returning with her fish which JJ7 tries to grab to no avail.
