August is the month when we've seen the Loch Arkaig ospreys depart on their journey south. We've enjoyed watching them this year - the wonderful parenting skills of Aila and Louis, and the antics of their 3 chicks, Captain, Vera and Doddie.
Mary GK did an absolutely wonderful video summarising the 2020 season. Thank you so much Mary! And here is Geemeff's great compilation, thank you!
2020 last dates:
Doddie JJ6 was last seen at the nest on Saturday 15th August 2020
Aila was last seen on Saturday 22nd August 2020
Captain JJ7 was last seen on Sunday 23rd August 2020
Vera JJ8 was last seen on Saturday 5 September.
An unidentified osprey was seen off camera on Sunday 6 September eating a fish. This could well have been Louis, having arrived and found no Vera around to feed.
Doddie JJ6 was videod and photographed fishing for over a fortnight at Avalon Marshes in Somerset

JJ6 = Doddie, JJ8 = Vera & JJ7 = Captain. Ian
12.21, JJ8 is on the nest when Aila delivers a fish. JJ6 swoops overhead and lands after Aila has flown & after JJ8 has taken the fish. Ian
EDIT - I think JJ8 finished the fish at 12.32, she flew at 12.41. JJ6 is on the nest (12.49).
Delivery
I couldn't get a good pictutre of Aila, but this shows her "arrowhead" marking on the back of her head.

13.01, JJ8 joins JJ6 on the nest as Louis brings in a fish. He lands right in front of JJ6 who takes the fish. Ian
EDIT - JJ7 arrives at 13.07. JJ6 still has the fish at 13.11 and swallows the tail at 13.36.

14.02, JJ7 & JJ8 are on the nest when Louis delivers a fish. I think JJ7 gets it. They both fly off almost straightaway as if something spooked them. Ian
14.03, JJ8 returns empty taloned (possibly confirming JJ7 got the fish).
First fly off
Second fly off (with the fish in the left foot)
14.29, JJ8 is on the nest when Aila brings in a fish. Ian
15.55, JJ8 & another (I'm guessing JJ7 but could be wrong) are on the nest when Aila brings in a fish. JJ8 gets it. Maybe Aila is staying on longer than 2019 as there is one extra mouth to feed compared to last year, just a thought. Ian
EDIT - the other chick is JJ7, lucky guess on my part.
Aila with the fish.
JJ8 with the (not huge) fish
16.07, JJ8 just about to dispose of the tail of the last fish. Ian
