LOCH ARKAIG - AUGUST 2020 TO MARCH 2021. Highlights are Mary GK's and Geemeff's wonderful videos of the 2020 season

August is the month when we've seen the Loch Arkaig ospreys depart on their journey south. We've enjoyed watching them this year - the wonderful parenting skills of Aila and Louis, and the antics of their 3 chicks, Captain, Vera and Doddie.

Mary GK did an absolutely wonderful video summarising the 2020 season. Thank you so much Mary! And here is Geemeff's great compilation, thank you!

2020 last dates:

Doddie JJ6 was last seen at the nest on Saturday 15th August 2020

Aila was last seen on Saturday 22nd August 2020

Captain JJ7 was last seen on Sunday 23rd August 2020

Vera JJ8 was last seen on Saturday 5 September.

An unidentified osprey was seen off camera on Sunday 6 September eating a fish. This could well have been Louis, having arrived and found no Vera around to feed.

Doddie JJ6 was videod and photographed fishing for over a fortnight at Avalon Marshes in Somerset

  • Louis arrives with a fish, and looks surprised there's no-one wanting the fish.

He's starting to look a lot healthier, obviously managing to eat more.

  • That flatfish that JJ6 flew off with at 18.51 was extremely lively, nearly flapped off the nest! It was also a record-breaker, being fish number six today but number 40 for the week, which breaks the previous weekly record of 39.

  • Morning all, no reports here or on WT chat of any activity this morning, a very cursory scroll back by me to about 04.00 doesn't indicate that anyone has been to the nest so far. Ian.

  • Morning all, the seventh fish which arrived last night at 21.06.13, making 41 for the week, caused some discussion as to whether or not it is a new record due to Aila delivering some of them - the previous record of 39 was all Louis.

    Fish number seven

  • First osprey action I've seen this morning. JJ8 eating while JJ7 goes hungry

  • 09.52, JJ8 is on the nest when Louis brings in a fish which JJ8 takes straightaway.. JJ7 has since arrived but JJ8 still has the fish. Whatever (if anything) was trouibling JJ8 a few days ago seems to have passed.  Ian

  • I think it is Louis on the nest with a large whole fish, and two juvies calling!   He is looking around - waiting for Aila perhaps.  JJ7 (?) already has a fish under talon, and there is another tail end lying abandoned.  The other juvie JJ6 is on the nest perch just over the farm rim.

No sign of Aila flying in, Louis tries to take a bite of the fish, and JJ6 comes closer, calling.  What a carry on!  There is fish aplenty.

  • When was Aila last seen?  Louis is still holding on to his fish, now tucking into it.  JJ6 and JJ7 continue to call.  No sign of JJ8.

  • 10.36, JJ8 has eaten enough so JJ7 gets the 09.52 fish. 10.45, JJ7 is still eating when Louis arrives with a headless fish.JJ7 takes the new fish. JJ8 arrives but having not long fed does nothing but flies off. 10.58, JJ7 is eating the 10.45 fish when Louis (I think it was him both times) brings in a nice whole fish. 11.01, JJ6 arrives to his usual perch. 11.08, Louis has been standing on the fish he brought in and JJ6 has remained on his perch with JJ7 standing on his fish, so Louis starts eating. 11.19, JJ6 eventually takes the fish from Louis, JJ7 suddenly becomes interested in it as well. Louis flies. The current position is that JJ6 is eating the 10.58 fish, JJ7 is eating the 10.45 fish and the 09.52 fish is lying on the nest. JJ8 having eaten a good bit of the 09.52 fish is not on the nest. Ian

Are both these deliveries by Louis? EDIT - the flamenco dancer back of head marking along with the absence of dots between wing and leg makes me say YES it is Louis at 10.45 & 10.58.
