MANTON BAY – JUNE 2020

Continued from Manton Bay – May 2020

The history of the Manton Bay nest, breeding stats and links to previous threads can be found here

The season so far:  The resident pair both returned on 16 March - Blue 33(11) at 07:12 and Maya at 13:16.   For the second consecutive year, Maya laid four eggs – the first on 29 March followed by another three first seen on 4, 6 and 9 April.  Maya and Blue 33(11) faithfully incubated the four eggs and on day 38, the first chick hatched 6 May c13:20 followed by Chick #2 on 8 May c06:10, Chick #3 on 10 May c14:45, and Chick #4 on 13 May c20:45.

All four chicks have thrived under the protection of Maya and Blue 33(11) who has once again proved to be a fantastic provider for his family.

In two/three week’s time, the chicks will be ringed and we’ll learn a bit more about them.

  • Thank You Karen for starting the thread and an excellent opening post, with links to "All the things you ever wanted to know about Manton Bay".....

Maya, 5R and 33(11) have already left a legacy of returners, they certainly fall into the "Super Osprey's" category.

8 chicks over 2 seasons, is quite a feat.

  • FISH @ 17:33

Maya grabs it th chicks move towards her

17:34     33 flies off - love the chicks faces!

17:38   Maya gets her balance now feeding the chicks - #4 up front

     17:42  #4 being fed

17:43   #4 looks up to Maya "Can I have some more please"  :-D

    17:46  Feed over.

  • 17:48   Maya has grabbed the fish again and the chicks gather round her

#1 & #2 up first - #4 lying down and #3 waiting at the back

17:50  lol  #4 has got its beak up

and grabbing fish along with the older chicks

17:56   #4 remains in front and continues to get fish

18:03   #4 now had enough and now lying down

18:05   Maya is standing on the fish but all the chicks are lying down so the feed may well be over.

    =======================================
You're welcome Mary :-) and I couldn't agree more about Maya, 5R and 33(11) being "Super Ospreys".
Also of interest is the fact that this is actually the third season Maya has laid 4 eggs with 33(11).  She laid 4 in 2017 but the fourth chick died not long after hatching and sadly the 2nd chick was killed - a horrible accident when Maya slipped on hay for it was wet/greasy and it was thought her talon caught the chick.   That is one of the reasons why I hate seeing so much hay!
I am unsure if she ever laid 4 eggs when partnering 5R.

  • 18:19  Maya is feeding the chicks again!!

18:20    #4 is back for more!

  • 18:34   33 arrives and grabs the fish

chicks move up towards him and he starts feeding them

18:38   33 is getting a dab hand at this :-)

18:40   33 flies off with the fish leaving the chicks who appear to be picking the straw

18:42  chicks all settle down again and 33 returns.  Can't see any fish in talon so he may have dropped it?

18:46   33 walks around the nest, staying for a moment before flying off

  • 18:54  There is a fish piece at Maya's feet which the chicks spy and all move up to her.

The older chick starts to nibble at it:-)

  • FISH @ 19;14

    33 arrives with a fish

33 starts to eat edge of nest - Maya is still feeding the chicks

19:16  33 feeds an older chick but Maya spies the fresh fish and makes a move for it

19:16  Maya takes the fish from 33

19:18   Maya starts to feed the fresh fish to the chicks

19:19   33 flies off and Maya continues feeding the chicks.

  • Thanks Karen for the new thread - what a super opening paragraph!

I have to be in work this week so my contributions will be a little bit thin on the ground. Many thanks for all today's updates, much appreciated :)
