John Williams has been running a poll on whether or whether not to name 5F.  He planned to ask the Llanidloes Primary school children to chose, if the vote went that way.  It seems most were in favour, so the children will be asked to offer name suggestions, and the choices will be put back to another vote.

I well remember that some of the LG chicks were named by Deshar Primary school.  I always feel for the children when news comes of a bird's demise.  However it does encourage engagement.  I may well continue with 5F or a combination of both!

I've closed the poll tonight (19 April) and with 311 votes for yes and 95 votes for no. It looks like 5F will be getting a name.

Thank you to all of you who took time to vote and to leave your comments. I know how emotive and sometimes devisive giving a wild animal a name is, and yes even one who is known by a leg ring, for so long. I appreciate and understand where everyone of you is coming from.

Just know this, it's not something which everyone should stick to or use. We all use methods which suit ourselves to associate with these birds. Some prefer numbers some prefer names. It will never please everyone. But as long as you remember the birds don't know that we give them human names, that it doesn't effect them in anyway.

But if It can enthuse just one child, who then goes onto doing something good for nature then it I think would be worth it.

    ****************************

What a coincidence!  I just came here from Welsh names website, having looked up names beginning with F.  Not a huge number of results, and mostly male.  "Fane" = good natured.  I intended to give it a pass, we'll see what the children come up with.

Brought some snaps with me ;)  No idea what they'll turn out like cos it's a new batch resizer.

Two fish, both small (there could have been other that I missed) - do we know where Dylan fishes?

  • Small fish ! not good enough Dylan - you'll soon have youngsters to feed. Were the fish whole or headless? 5F needs feeding up with eggs on the way
  • In response to the where does Dylan fish question, Llyn Clywedog is a reservoir on the Severn, now owned and managed by Severn Trent Water. Link here

  • Scylla, you're welcome. It helps understand the Welsh locations that I have done enough night classes to know that llyn is Welsh for lake.

Dylan delivered a smallish fish at 9.35, and 5F flew off with. Not quite sure he is 100% comfortable with this incubating business.

  • Fish delivered at 09.35, looks whole but is smallish, this is maybe the type of fish available in the lake.   I guess they can't all be whoppers from Fish Farms Smiley

  • I thought it might help people who haven't been to Llyn Clywedog to know a little about the geography. The camera is pointing approx North North East, and the reservoir is to the west of the nest, so off to the left hand side of the camera shot.. The hide (which is not currently in place because of distancing) is at the end of the track which heads towards the top left hand corner of the shot.
  • Dylan delivered another slightly larger whole fish at 11.46
  • There was an intruder at the LC nest, 12:55. Dylan gave chase and that could clearly be seen. 5F was very agitated

Dylan flying to the nest (top left)

Dylan flew up to the cam post; intruder, top centre

Reported on chat that the intruder could have possibly had a blue ring
