Annette - Some years ago I was so fed up with a book I was reading that I marked all the errors, counted them up and sent the book to the publishers, asking if they had an opening for a decent proof-reader. Surprise, surprise - I didn't receive a reply! And who relies on spell checks? I certainly don't! For a start, they don't seem to know whether they or I am English or American! And as for the grammar check … words fail me. Should we perhaps also mention incorrectly used apostrophes? Maybe not … life's too short.

Annette- .....and what about the daily newspaper? Errors galore: grammar, spelling, etc.......
Begs the question "what exactly does an editor do?"

bjane:  Well, my OH takes the LA TImes and I subscribed to the NYT, the Washington Post and the Guardian.  I can't recall seeing any typos (though I don't read all the articles) but I definitely see them on the web site of our local TV station (and I tell them!).

PatO:  That's a hoot.  Did you give the publisher a grade (F?)  :-)    Re my local TV station (see post to bjane), I'm one of these dreary viewers who e-mails them about it.  I was also tempted to ask if they had an opening for an editor...

OG: Did you ever hear anything about J's scan?

I'm all the way up to 2015 in my scanning caper; from now on I'll just be blending digital with scanned though I suspect it's not going to be that simple.

I would have posted this yesterday but was logged out and to tired to do anything then.

J received a call from The Christie late yesterday afternoon - including an apology that he had to wait so long for the biopsy result (four weeks). Still not a full diagnosis - they know it is something but not conclusive on whether it is malignant. He will have to have surgery, but has to wait till Friday next week after a multidisciplinary meeting on Thursday to know how much they will do. The operation will probably be booked with a specialist surgeon at Wythenshawe - also in Manchester. He will be back at work Monday - end of summer hols here - but doesn't really feel ready for it, and we all feel that the waiting is by no means over. We shall have plans to make, but can't do anything yet.

LINDA - hope the journeys go well, and have a lovely day with the family - especially wee Rosie!

OG:  Ugh. A  hard time of just waiting and wondering for you guys.  I hope they organize it all sooner than later and don't wonder that J doesn't feel like going back to work. Hugs from here to all of you.

Heather: Twelve!  Knowing your daughters, I'm sure you got lots of help, but even then.....  A restful week ahead I hope?

We have May Gray in August.  A cool-ish summer for us, but I'm not complaining.

We are back home after a good journey. (Both there & back)

We have had a very pleasant day: we stopped in Droitwich en route and gave Bonnie a walk in the very good municipal park there. The family were pleased to see us-- as I climbed the steps to their front door, I could hear Tomasz shouting 'They've brought cake!!" It went down well, after lunch!

Little Rosie has come on in leaps and bounds since her early entry into the world. She spent quite a while asleep in my arms. The boys played at chasing Granddad around the garden.

The sun came out thankfully, after all the wet skies we've had recently.
