The 2 chicks were ringed on 4 July and assessed as female. They were given ring numbers JJ0 and JJ2, and later named by popular vote as Mallie and Rannoch. Both weighed 1.49kg on ringing but will weigh a lot more now after a further month's-worth of protein-packed-piscine-parenting. The WT subsequently said they thought Mallie may be male. S/he fledged on 20 July and Rannoch on 27 July.

Another fish for Rannoch, Mallie not seen:
She flew with it without eating any first:
And another fish for Rannoch:
She flew with that too:
And a whole flounder for Rannoch - she doesn't know what to do with it and has been standing on the nest ever since:
But she's just flown.
Is Mallie off fishing for herself?
IMAGICAT
Scylla said "Is Mallie off fishing for herself?"
Ian says "Or is she off? I think she hatched on 1 June which would make her 81 days old today."
Ian
Rannoch crash-landed with her flounder, she'd come to defend but it didn't come to anything.
She has flown again with the fish, sort of alarm calling as she went. Ian
20.18, Rannoch flies in immediately ahead of Louis who has a very nice headless fish. Again, no sense of urgency on Rannoch's part to claim the fish. Mallie was last seen on the nest at 07.30 this morning, maybe she has departed on migration. Rannoch doesn't hang about for long before flying with her fish.Ian

What a good day Rannoch has had - is she due for a short period of one-on-one before she leaves us?
I was hoping to get a really good snap of Louis in this kind evening light, but he wasn't co-operating:
Just in case we don't see Mallie again, here is a summary of her activities (witnessed by us) yesterday - last seen leaving the nest @ 08:53.
She'd been on the campost, then on the Robin's perch, then ate all the leftover scraps she could find and flew off... came back for a final check, found nothing.
Guess what? It's raining ;)
