This is a wonderful book describing how the ospreys were first extirpated in Scotland around 1916 and then were found to return in 1954.
A number of people on the forum now have a copy so we can have a discussion about it.
Here is what the book looks like. Its ISBN number is: 9780434089109

I just been reading page 170 about the alleged hatching on June 4th 1959. Now it is felt that the first egg was laid on May 1st 1959. Mind you without webcams one cannot be sure.
It is interesting that just because 35 days had elapsed then they assumed that the first egg must have hatched.
Now we know that while it is possible that osprey eggs can hatch in 35 days first eggs usually take 37 or 38 days.
It is interesting that only at about 1.30pm on June 9th did definite evidence of hatching emerged. So it seems likely that the first egg took 38 to 39 days to hatch in 1959 which is exactly what we might expect given our present knowledge. So the celebration on June 4 1959 was indeed somewhat premature.
So some more people have bought "Scottish Ospreys". It will be good to hear their accounts of it.
The book has become even more special to me now that I have visited Loch Garten and tried to figure out the exact sites of the various nests and frustration nests.
The only place located for centain was the Loch an Eilein a picture of which is on page 78 of the book. I will post my own version soon.
It really gives a sense of history to stand from the point where Dunar began his swim in snow (page 46) . You would not get me trying that under any circumstance.
Of course meeting George Waterston's brother was a huge thrill too.
TIGER, whilst I am enjoying the book and I'm so pleased with my purchase , I did find I had to miss a lot of chapter two out. Sorry for being such a whimp.
