LOCH ARKAIG (The Woodland Trust) - JULY 2019

Link to June 2019 thread (Following Karen's excellent example of providing useful links....)

On 1 July, chick 1 is 30 days old. Chick 2, from egg 3, is 27 days old.

Apart from the sad failure-to-hatch of egg 2 , everything has been reasonably settled on the nest, and Louis is in the running for Mary's 'Fisherman of the Year Award'.

  • 04-50 am .. First Fish of the day. Whole, but a tiddler by this nests standards.

Passed from Louis to Aila, and all gone by 04-54 !!!

  • Gosh TRYING! That must have been a very small fish indeed
Currently chick seem to be asleep and Aila is standing at the back of the nest, looking out, no doubt wondering where the proper breakfish is
  • Picking up from when TRYING retired (and thanks for reports to him and all!)...

    No supper fish !!!

It was a good night, particularly for Aila.

She actually got some tucked naps!

Not signifying anything, I just liked it :)

Pre-flyabout stretch, the chicks are preening fuzzily:

    And a pre-flyabout flex:

Was this the tiddleriest tiddler we've seen?!

Hope you can see it under Louis's foot:

    JJ2 was rarin' to eat:

JJ0 was more interested in getting ready to fly - just as well!

After a spell of fish-calling, Aila was off again:

She brought back an invisible stick, half an hour later she was off again:

This time while she was away a Jay bird visited the Robin's perch (pity we can't see a little more of that perch):

There followed a very long buffer here :(  but the scene hadn't changed when it resolved so I assume nothing significant occurred.

Aila was in 'n out, in 'n out, over and over.

One time she returned with this stick, which got plonked all over the place but ended up at the front, fittingly in view of JJ0's activities!

Bold JJ0 tripped on the left edge:

    Then on the front edge:

    But was undaunted:

Aila spent some time on the Robin's perch:

Phew!  Louis came good with a proper headless fish:

Aila told him to go get another!

Aila masked the feed, but JJ0 turned away first for a weedy poop, I haven't seen a good one since yesterday!

Aila finished the fish, this was the tailfin going down:

She checked the bark stocks and after this she went and got some more:

She's managed some nod-offs but has been out again since this snap:

End of catchup - gotta finish somewhere !!! ;)

  • FISH !!! but I can't see it yet...

    This'll do for now ;)

  • Louis landed, handed the fish over, which looked as tho is was whole, and fled. Aila feeding the chicks

  • An article from The Press and Journal on the ringing, and that Woodland Trust is asking for name suggestions, perhaps related to the area, the history, etc.

He added: “We are asking the public to suggest names on our osprey page. Later next week we will pick a few of the best suggestions and put them to a public vote. It would be great to hear names that reflect the area or the bird’s particular character.

“The forest has lots of history to draw on with stories of buried Jacobite treasure through to Commando training during World War II. The sibling rivalry might throw up a few ideas and it would be great to see Gaelic language and culture in the mix too.”
