2017       The nesting platform used by the birds for more than ten years has been rebuilt almost from scratch as, with the birds adding new material every spring, it was beginning to sag under its own weight

Unringed m    10 April named Louis m arrived. Inconclusive whether same 10-yr male, but later concensus was that he was a  first-time breeder

Unringed f         30 May new unringed female accepted by Louis

At 35 days old it has a body mass of 1,305g and wingspan of 291mm.

9 August             Lachlan fledges unexpectedly

The Loch is home to otters (three orphans were released in the late autumn 2017)  Pine marten have been seen on the nest.  WTE and Osprey breed.  It's about time I tried to get back there!

Don't think so, maybe this is one of the surprises George mentioned.

Cathy, the below is from George

"The new stuff we have planned is more in the way of supportive content rather than any great changes regards the live stream. I shall make enquiries tomorrow to see what that zoom in was caused by. Possibly a test of some kind."

So not one of the planned surprises. Camera is currently back at normal view. Ian

  • Interesting - thanks Ian, Mary & George.

  • If they do have the ability to zoom it would be a great asset at times. Let's hope they can and, if so, do use it.

  • Mike, agreed at times. I didn't think that they had a "real-time" presence to operate the camera so what worries me is that it could be either a zoom that happens at pre-determined times or even worse completely unintended & it could happen at inappropriate times. Ian

  • I take your point Ian. In that event best left well alone!

We have had incidents of camera's left in odd positions at times and it does cause grief.....particularly for MC and her overnight recordings!

Anything that makes things awkward for MC should be avoided, that we can definitely agree on :) Ian
  • Osprey briefly on the nest about 14.30

  • Well he does seem to be keeping us waiting!April is fast approaching. Ian, could you refresh my memory? Seems I remember Louis waiting for quite some time for a lady love to join him. I think after a long wait there were a couple of suiters and he ultimately chose Alia? Do you recall when Louis & Alia were officially a couple?  Thanks, Fawn

  • Fawn, according to UK Ospreys Louis was seen on 10 April & Aila on 28 April in 2017. I only started looking in late last summer so don't know about any other suitors, I don't recall reading about any. I do remember reading about their initial feeble attempts at courting (lots of moss but no fish from Louis!) & mating, suggesting that Louis in particular was not a mature bird. Ian

  • I think I most likely started watching this nest same time as you. I do recall that Louis was not (the) Louis that was known before as a mature Osprey and he was a bit stingy with the fish & had kind of missed the mark on mating at first.(He did manage! <smile>) I have tried to find where I was first learning about this nest, but without much luck. I am just happy I did! Thank you for the time table, that is what I was trying to figure out. Fawn
