Osprey Q & A

This thread is a total experiment! I thought of it because a few nights ago, a lot of of useful information about ospreys was being posted in the LG Diary comments, but because of the blog format, it will be out of sight once a new blog is posted, and easily forgotten.

The idea for this thread:

·         To provide a place for people to ask questions about ospreys at Loch Garten, or ospreys in general, which members of the Forum will answer to the best of their ability. NB Questions directed to the team at Loch Garten, should still be posted in the Comments area of the Loch Garten Osprey Diary.

·         To preserve the answers for future reference

Asking Questions

For clarity, please only ask one question at a time.

Replying to Questions

Try to be specific, giving links to the relevant information where possible, or quote your sources. If you are giving your own opinions, recollections or theories, please make that clear.

If the question you are answering is not the last post in the thread, please use the Quote facility to include the question in your answer.

General

To make it easier to search for the topic in the future, use the Tags field. For example, if your question is “Is Odin really Scandinavian?” enter “Odin” in Tags.

  • Thank you TIGER; wonderful but sad that he didn't get a warm welcome - though to be expected, I guess.

Was this the same 5R that fathered 08 and 09 this year? Sorry but I find it hard to remember when numbers are involved :-(

I know I wasnt putting it correctly Tiger, I didnt mean about them being partners, I was meaning was it possible that some not all may winter in the same vicinity or come upon each other in their wintering grounds as they must when they are in Scotland, as we discussed before when Blue XE didnt return Red 8T was supposed to have taken over his nest - so was just wondering if it was possible that their paths could cross in wintering grounds, OK guess it was a stupid question!  will keep my crazy fantasies to myself now LOL.....

Edit: Also just wanted to bump the thread back up to the top again as I had to go looking for it way down on the next page.

Looks like my thoughts were not just fantasy then, as my questions have been answered not only by Keith, but by the fact that Blue YD and Ceulan paths almost crossed.

  • deleted as more open minded :)

  • I cannot believe this thread has not been used since November.

I am curious about the Hellgate nest. Iris laid eggs and thank you Tiger and Chloe for your stats and you are going to say from previous year and fascinating. Brill to be able to look up and thank you.

    30/4 egg 1

    3/5 egg 2

    6/5 egg 3 and all 3 kicked.

egg 4 11/5 and accepted by Stan

    egg 5 14/5 or 15/5

Has anyone ever known an Osprey lay 5 eggs? I do not think a second clutch can happen in 5 days from the 3rd egg.  I wonder if something has kicked in and four is unusual and a fifth laid. I am fascinated.  Ospreys are re-writing the rule books.

  • I have thoughts and this to me this is amazing and it cannot be a second clutch after 5 days or could it be? Something has kicked in and curious and maybe Iris has laid 5 eggs.

[/quote]yes but a second clutch and this to me is curious and too soon for a second clutch. Intrigued I am :) Can an Osprey lay a second clutch in 5 days and has anyone known an Osprey lay 5 eggs in a clutch. I am curious and wonder if eggs fail if an Osprey can produce a 5th egg. I think amazing, 5th egg or second clutch. So interesting.
