This thread is a total experiment! I thought of it because a few nights ago, a lot of of useful information about ospreys was being posted in the LG Diary comments, but because of the blog format, it will be out of sight once a new blog is posted, and easily forgotten.
The idea for this thread:
· To provide a place for people to ask questions about ospreys at Loch Garten, or ospreys in general, which members of the Forum will answer to the best of their ability. NB Questions directed to the team at Loch Garten, should still be posted in the Comments area of the Loch Garten Osprey Diary.
· To preserve the answers for future reference
Asking Questions
For clarity, please only ask one question at a time.
Replying to Questions
Try to be specific, giving links to the relevant information where possible, or quote your sources. If you are giving your own opinions, recollections or theories, please make that clear.
If the question you are answering is not the last post in the thread, please use the Quote facility to include the question in your answer.
General
To make it easier to search for the topic in the future, use the Tags field. For example, if your question is “Is Odin really Scandinavian?” enter “Odin” in Tags.
Noisette, lots of advice & information about Osprey nests on Roy Dennis's website www.roydennis.org/.../index.asp
Two questions:
(1)
On the Estonian kalakotkas forum some members are saying that the first egg's frequent, quite prolonged exposure to the elements is not a concern because the eggs are kept cool until all eggs are laid, then incubation will start in earnest.
I know that this is the case with birds such as Canada geese (whose chicks need to hatch at the same time so they all travel to water together), but surely ospreys, like barn owls, incubate constantly, with only tiny breaks, from Day1 of Egg1.
I am being specific about Canada geese and barn owls because I have recent experience of them but am too ignorant to generalise by saying "geese" and "owls". Does it apply to all birds of prey?
Can someone confirm or correct re ospreys? :-)
(2)
Could someone explain about bark helping with bug-infested nests?
IMAGICAT
Scylla ospreys usually start incubating their eggs as soon as the first egg is laid. Last year at Dyfi the first egg was severely chilled on a few occasions. The egg did eventually hatch after 42 days, on June 6 2011 giving rise to Dulas. Although Dulas was from egg #1 he hatched after Einion who was from egg #2.
Tiger Signature
Thank you, TIGER :-)
What are the chances of the chicks surviving in this dread full weather?

Very good I would have thought. Bynack was hatched during a severe storm.
Tiger I remember and he was nicknamed "Storm" :) and Tore was "Star"
edit before they were named.
Some good-humoured controversy on the Loch of the Lowes thread today regarding whether ospreys stash fish.
One poster has been told they do, and another believes they don't....
Does anyone have an opinion, or information on the subject?
A thing of beauty is a joy forever.
Tiger to the rescue please.
Haha, fish! couldn't have put it better myself!!
