This thread is a total experiment! I thought of it because a few nights ago, a lot of of useful information about ospreys was being posted in the LG Diary comments, but because of the blog format, it will be out of sight once a new blog is posted, and easily forgotten.
The idea for this thread:
· To provide a place for people to ask questions about ospreys at Loch Garten, or ospreys in general, which members of the Forum will answer to the best of their ability. NB Questions directed to the team at Loch Garten, should still be posted in the Comments area of the Loch Garten Osprey Diary.
· To preserve the answers for future reference
Asking Questions
For clarity, please only ask one question at a time.
Replying to Questions
Try to be specific, giving links to the relevant information where possible, or quote your sources. If you are giving your own opinions, recollections or theories, please make that clear.
If the question you are answering is not the last post in the thread, please use the Quote facility to include the question in your answer.
General
To make it easier to search for the topic in the future, use the Tags field. For example, if your question is “Is Odin really Scandinavian?” enter “Odin” in Tags.

I would doubt that there will be any translocations in Scotland, Patily, but I certainly wouldn't rule out further translocations to other parts of the UK.
[/quote]I wonder if translocation has been considered to the West Country. Maybe the Levels would be thought suitable, now that there are good thriving wildlife reserves there. I understand there were ospreys in Somerset many years ago.
A thing of beauty is a joy forever.
Hi Rach, I suspect it's largely down to finance & funding; I think Rutland were lucky with Funding from Anglia water. Conservation bodies such as WWT & RSPB have other priorities; with Osprey's, whilst being loved by us, expanding naturally & being neither treatened globally or in this country.
I am saddened by the Laird not returning this year to Ladly and LoTLs - has it ever been known that a male deserts the female if a nest has failed any particular year?
I keep popping back to see peregrine on Charing X hospital The chicks are very vocal Are osprey chicks like that when newly hatched?

I have heard it said that it does happen but I have no examples that I can think of. Unless Green 7Y is sighted somewhere then I think he is probably in osprey heavem. However ospreys have turned up later than this like Henry in 2005 and S18 (Blue XD) in 2001.
Tiger Signature
Thank you TIGER . I always appreciate your responses

This reminds me, Tiger - did we ever get definite confirmation that XD is S18? And if so, was "black 8X" an error on the old Rutland site, or his original ring, since replaced? Don't remember seeing anything definite, but it gets difficult to keep up with all the threads at egg-laying time!

Let us say that we know that Blue XD is S18 but we have not been able to sort out the problems with that.
Just a thought with all the terrible weather at LG. Do you know of any ospreys abandoning their nest because of the weather conditions?
Pam I am no expert and have only watched for two years.
The rain is terrible this year and they will stay put and poor EJ is siiting in the rain.
I am no expect but others may say different.
Aberfoyle the nest was abanndoned last year when the eggs were due to hatch so a good question. There were terrible winds and the nest was abandonned the day hatching was due
