I think that a lot of these early sightings have now been discredited. They were really pale buzzards.

Here is an Interesting Article from Devon Birds with some good photos.
Buzzard or Osprey ?
That was very interesting. I find myself wondering how many people have seen what they thought was a distant osprey but was actually a great black-backed gull? Both birds have long, slender wings and are quite big.
Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

Gibraltar latest
27 Feb: Cloudy skies as a frontal system passed close to Gibraltar, with some sunny spells and showers during the morning and late afternoon. Today saw the first day of good raptor passage with a constant arrival of hundreds of Black Kites and Short-toed Eagles and many Marsh Harriers. Swallows were also on the move north. No counts were made.
Alan, with the current UK weather, I think staying in Africa for a wee bit longer would be a good move, albeit that it will take a while for them to get here. Ian
Any day now we will see the first sightings at the migration watchpoints in France. Let's hope the weather improves soon.
