WEEKLY CHAT (non-osprey) SUNDAY AUGUST 19,2017

Last night in Arizona; heading home tomorrow with stopover in Palm Desert. Will catch  up then!

  • Good morning.  I’m actually ready early to set off to Dumfries for orthopaedic appointment!  After a slow start yesterday, I finally felt awake by lunchtime, and was fine all day!  Daughter phoned last evening to say they were safe home after calling in to see Grandson#2 in Dunfermline.

Strange that my post yesterday appeared twice – can’t think of an explanation.

Heather – surprised your shower is on the lighting circuit – would expect it to have its own!  I hope you find a suitable light for utility room – good that Step-son will help with the choice.  Kittens sound interesting with the two girls.

Lindy – a long time for your friend to be on morphine; hope they can soon get her off it – gradually, of course.  Thankfully I have never needed it for more than a few days.

Annette – have a safe day home.

Dibnlib – can you explain why you always take Benson for a swim after his visit to trimmer’s?  I wouls have thought he would want to keep his new look pristine.

Nice day so far, and should be okay till after we get home at lunchtime.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Good morning all

    Eclipse day in the US!

OG - You are much more attuned to electrical matters than I am! The downstairs shower room was completely refurbished about ten years ago and the electrician employed by the bathroom firm installed a pull string switch bedside the shower. The switch is fixed to the ceiling and has a red light which displays when the shower is operational. The shower itself is a power shower but the hot water comes from the gas boiler, ie is not a shower that heats the water as you use it. So I am told that the ceiling switch only controls the pump and therefore requires less amps and it is OK to put it on the lighting circuit for that part of the house. Gosh, I hope I've got that right.

LINDY - the kittens are both black and white, brother and sister. Tux is so named because he looks as if he is wearing a tuxedo. Goodness knows how Gizmo got her name but I suspect that Mia had a hand in it.

  • Phew, HEATHER - feel better about your wiring now - thanks for the explanation.  Hope I wasn't being too outspoken, but I was concerned!

Consultant was very happy with me this morning - said I should use crutches as long as I need - might or might not ever manage without since I was already using walking sticks before.  And he totally agrees with me using a wheelchair for transfers etc when I need to.  He was glad to hear that I sometimes pootle about (his words) in the garden.  He doesn't need to see me routinely, but I am to phone his secretary if I need him!

After getting caught in traffic queue on the way there (road works) we returned on the low road via the ice cream farm for sandwiches and real ice cream milk shakes!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Morning all: Sitting up in bed with coffee watching CNN with brilliant sunshine outside. My Seattle friend is in Salem, Oregon, having driven with another friend at the crack of dawn yesterday to be in the Path of Totality. She sent a photo of their "accommodations" - two folding chairs and table set with two glasses and a champagne bottle in a parking space at a school that charged $185/night for the privilege! They were surrounded by tents; they don't have one and planned to sleep in her car, parked in a nearby lot! She called me last weekend and asked if I'd  join them, which I would have done if I hadn't already set up this Arizona trip with appointments, etc.  We'll see about 65% of the eclipse here.

Seems like there've been/will be multiple family visits and celebrations on that side of the Pond.

Lindybird: Love the photo.  :-)  Must agree about Big Ben - grandson and fiancee will be staying near there on their October trip and I too am wondering why they can't broadcast the chimes - they're so iconic.

OG: Nice to get good report from doc. Hope EE gets used to his new dentures.  I assume he was able to cope with that yummy ice cream?  :-)

dibnlib: Is Benson taking a swim to help get rid of loose hair?

OK, time to hop in the shower, grab something to eat and hit the highway. I'm hoping the LA  Monday morning traffic will have settled down by the time I get there, but am not holding my breath.

  • OG    Glad to hear your good news.  The reason we take Benson to Dores after being groomed is because the groomer lives well on the way there. The beach  is great for him as he can run, rather than jump in. After Benson has had his fun we can enjoy a lunch (today I had a tuna and sweetcorn baguette and OH had chicken/bacon and spring onion baguette, both with a very nice salad. OH had a pint of beer so we walked before and after our lunch. We ate outside as it was such a lovely day and there was another couple there with their beautiful 6 month old Cockapoo so we enjoyed a chat with them and came home with an e mail address of the breeder. Apparently she breeds Cavapoos as well and has some rescue dogs. Home for them all is a farm on the outskirts of Huntly.  There were a few other dogs, but we left Benson in the car as he can be a bit of a handful when we are eating anywhere other than home

Oh is now at the driving range, getting into practice for joining a local club.  I am taking it quiet at home. My GP prescribed patches to help my heel and warned me I might get headaches the first few days I used them.  Unfortunately this has proved to be the case but hopefully they will stop after another couple of days.

  • OG   You made me smile about Benson keeping pristine. I went swimming this morning and met a friend who told me she is having her haircut early on Fri prior to a family wedding on Sat. She won't be doing anything active between cut and wedding.....so she will be keeping her hair pristine!!!  We will both be swimming/gyming on Wed so will meet her for coffee then.   Tomorrow a friend is coming here after a med appt and we will walk if she brings her dog (this is weather depending as she will have to leave him in the car) then coffee at Tiso and lunch here.

Someone was locked in the disabled shower this morning. Her friend was in the main changing area shouting instructions to her to tell her how to find the unlocking system on the inside. Unfortunately she pressed the wrong thing and next there was an alarm ringing and staffed raced in with medical kits to help. The response was very quick which was good to see. Anyway there wasn't a problem and we all had a laugh.

  • OG- It is nice to know that folk care! Thank you.

  • Good to hear that you have been signed off, OG. Do you find the crutches easier than the sticks?.

I see that my neighbour two doors away has a rather posh looking scooter now. I spotted her son giving her driving lessons!

DIANE- Sorry to read about your computer. I wish you lived here, OH's PC is sitting here, feeling unloved and I don't know what to do with it.

DIBNLIB- take it you had food from the Dores Inn?

  • Good evening, all.  We've just got back from a lovely weekend in Wales - just this morning I was watching the gorgeous Monty eating his fish in front of me!  Having just driven from Dyfi to the Suffolk coast I'm now officially knackered.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • Heather: Thank you so much for that. I appreciate it! And thanks to everyone who commented on my computer failure. However, I've just now repaired it! I finally engaged my brain and figured out the problem.

    Here's the story.

The way the computer was acting made me think that it had some sort of malware (virus, etc.). No matter what program I opened, anywhere on the computer, the PC would go crazy and start opening new tabs of HELP pages on the web -- sometimes dozens of new tabs until the computer locked up.

Sounds like an infection with malware, right?

So I drove myself batty loading different anti-malware programs to find the bug. I tried all manner of troubleshooting and diagnostic efforts. Spent hours exploring to discover a solution. I finally even re-installed Windows 10, but nothing worked. By that time, I was crying over having to spend money on a new PC.

My life hasn't been going well, so today outdoors during the solar eclipse I prayed to the Great Source to give me strength, wisdom, and focus -- to help me think more clearly and find the pathway to get my life back on track.

I came inside and was preparing dinner. I was obsessing -- again -- over the computer and bingo! I realized that I wasn't paying attention to what the computer was opening, just that it was wildly opening programs and pages all on its own. I finally focused on the fact that it was opening HELP pages.

The F1 key on the keyboard is the HELP key. I shut the computer down and unplugged the keyboard from the back. I used a screw driver to pry the F1 key cover out of the keyboard. Inside was a gnat. Yup, a small flying insect. We get lots of gnats in Indiana in August. They come to every light, especially a computer monitor.

I removed the dead gnat, cleaned the mechanism, and snapped the key cover back on. My PC worked just fine! The gnat guts had caused the HELP key to stick!

Valuable lesson for me: Stop being consumed by anxiety and begin looking at life from a different perspective.

    LOL!!!

    Hello to everyone.
