There's a nest in Ontario, Canada, west of Toronto that lost its female June 18. The male has stepped up to care for the 2 chicks (16 and 14 days old) by himself. Belwood Lake and Grand River - assuming those are his fishing grounds - look to be practically on the doorstep of the nest.
So far, so good...obviously a very fragile situation, but is it unheard of for a single parent to raise chicks from this stage to fledging?
Read a report earlier that Luther came in with a tiddler dropped it on the nest to chase an intruder, and that chick #2 managed to tear a few good size chunks from it.
Tempo reported seeing C#1 eating something on the nest so maybe it was C#1, either way still seems good at this age.
Edit
Here is a link to the youtube video, It's 20 mins long, and about 10 mins in is when it finally manages to get some bits off.

This photo by Shaun Nicholas from a different angle shows there's a little bit of a railing, but really not much!

Fish count for the week of Monday 26 June through Sunday 2 July: 34.
C#1 dominates C#2 during feedings, but Luther brings in enough fish that both are satisfied over the course of a day.
A bit of humor in honor of Luther's exceptional fishing skills, authored by Bruce Welton. :)
I have to say my heart is beating watching them so close to the edge of the nest. Just looked in now and they are both preening and I can see a lot of flies around them.
Feed in progress now but only one chick feeding which I think is the smaller but cannot be sure. The other chick is lying down not interested. Cannot see size of fish as Dad is hiding it.
Just had a quick look in and found the chicks in the same place as they were yesterday...obviously something interesting that side of the nest. Looks sunny today.

I posted a photo a few mins ago and when I returned to my computer the nest was empty... I nearly had a heart attack...but I see someone is trimming the nest so Im assuming they removed the chicks first???
