DAILY UPDATE ~ Loch Garten nest ~ Monday, 22 May 2017

Odin not seen since 18 May 2017 early afternoon --- 3 days. We have one chick left, no fish deliveries, and an unringed male hanging about the nest. I am personally moved by the greatest forum participants I have ever seen. Many opinions expressed with no personal rancor in the disagreements. I believe all  are opening their hearts and minds in a fervent unified wish for the best for EJ. As one forum poster said, "If only EJ knew how many are thinking of her." I am back in town and stricken to see all the news, yet so very honored to be in the company of such courageous nature watchers. Thank you all.

At this moment EJ is sleeping on a mercifully quiet nest with a light wind but no precipitation. May she have peaceful dreams that come true for her. © RSPB - Loch Garten and Carnyx Wild

  • I've not posted before about the decision made about Intervention or not but suspect that much of the decision must be about the amount of intervention required. When they provided fish to EJ a few years ago & Dyfi helped out at their nest following the floods, it was effectively a one off piece of assistance.

This year they could have put out fish for EJ, but given the number of intruders most of this would probably have been stolen, and given that they would have had to feed for several months, more intruders are likely to have been encouraged into the area by the free food, making feeding EJ almost impossible.

The other option would be to try and remove the chicks & hand rear them. When chicks are removed from the nest for translocation they are 6 weeks old & able to feed themselves. I don't know if chicks this young have ever been hand reared (those with more knowledge on the US scene would no doubt have more information), but I do know that Ospreys generally react very badly in captivity & hand rearing Chicks this young would have been very difficult, if not impossible.

It was obviously their decision to make & would obviously accept whatever choices they made, but suspect this was the correct one.

  • Alarm chirps.

Two well known webcams have been closed already and sooner or later more will follow.

Anyone choosing to criticise the RSPB in this most difficult of situations should consider what might happen if they pulled the plug.

My question would by who would put up a wildlife webcam and not expect criticism when things go wrong, or close them down! if they don't like what is being said?

It is no fault of Loch Garten that things went wrong. Why attack them?

Do you attack the BBC for war?

  • I'm not attacking LG, so I've no idea why you came out with that.

I'm saying that a decision was made that some people disagreed with which as far as I know that isn't illegal, they are voicing their opinion, which should be expected if you have a webcam, so why would you shut it down unless you only want people to watch it who only agree with everything you say.

    What a stupid comment.

I agree with this, Starling. Everyone should be able to voice their opinions - this is important. It is when posts have become repeatedly abusive and threats are made that webcams have been shut down in the past, that's all.

  • Tiger  Let me make this crystal clear I have not attacked LG, I disagreed with a decision RSPB made, I'm so sorry I was expected to have no opinion unless it was to agree with them or you!

  • Come on guys. What's done is done, and it only brings more sorrow to keep churning it over. Let's draw a line under it, and move on, please.

  • I think it would be best, as some people may have something to say/ want to discuss, to perhaps move the topic over to the osprey chat thread or even a dedicated thread as it is an interesting topic and leave the DU to its purpose ie reporting the daily nest activity :-)
