DAILY UPDATE ~ Loch Garten nest ~ Monday, 22 May 2017

Odin not seen since 18 May 2017 early afternoon --- 3 days. We have one chick left, no fish deliveries, and an unringed male hanging about the nest. I am personally moved by the greatest forum participants I have ever seen. Many opinions expressed with no personal rancor in the disagreements. I believe all  are opening their hearts and minds in a fervent unified wish for the best for EJ. As one forum poster said, "If only EJ knew how many are thinking of her." I am back in town and stricken to see all the news, yet so very honored to be in the company of such courageous nature watchers. Thank you all.

At this moment EJ is sleeping on a mercifully quiet nest with a light wind but no precipitation. May she have peaceful dreams that come true for her. © RSPB - Loch Garten and Carnyx Wild

  • Sorry I havent posted for a while, but I do read every post, I have had a lump in my throat, so much these past few days , and Karens post, has finnished me off, Im hearbroken, EJ and Odin were the first Ospreys I found many years ago when I was ill, and you lovely people and they kept me going,

those little chicks, and Ej, and of course the gorgeous boy that is Odin, have never been out of my thoughts, just heartbroken x

The more you rush, the longer it takes

  • It is a sad morning but I for one am glad the saga is over. It is hard to believe it but as far as Loch Garten is concerned the osprey breeding season is over.

Still there will be lots to interest us in the days and weeks ahead before EJ begins the long journey to Africa.

  • I too am relieved it is over. So sad that a season which started out so well, should end so tragically. My thanks to you all for the much appreciated daily updates.

  • Hello once again dear friends. A well written opening post CC, thanks. I too am glad that there will be no more suffering on the nest, as these past days have been so hard, the little ones are now at peace. Beautiful EJ will be away to get that well deserved fish and start to get herself fit and well again, although I dare say it will take some more time for the heartache of not having her chicks to tend to, to,pass. As for our magnificent Odin, as Lmac has said, I too also think he was injured in the intrusion with the other birds and so hope and pray that he will be resting and getting himself fit and will once again join EJ, and that we will see them on the nest again. I am so proud to be part of this forum and over these last few days feel I have made new friends in all of you, albeit we knew each other's names before. We await good news, I hope. Until later CL

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • The way she stood there just now looking into the nest cup is breaking my heart.

  • Even though she has a fish which is the good news, I think EJ looks rather lost.

  • Hello everyone, been following the unfolding events and obsessively checking into this thread over the last few days and have been privileged to read all your well informed insights and comments. My family made annual trips to see the loch garten ospreys when I was a child and I've now started making the annual pilgrimage with my own young family and I'm just so sad that the excitement around the centre when we were last there (between EJ laying the 2nd and 3rd eggs) has come to this.

I wonder if any of you will share any of your thoughts on a couple of things...1. What will EJ do now? Will she "court" any of these intruding males? What would happen if Odin returned? Would they mate again next season?

Secondly- on the "intervention " question- looking back through old LG blog posts from prev years I see that there is quite a lot of intervention at times, tidying the nest, repairing the nest etc before the ospreys return- is there some clear thought process as to what constitutes acceptable/ unacceptable intervention? Or is it just a decision making process at the time?

Thanks in advance, sorry for long post...
