The purpose of this thread is for recording the season’s day to day activity at the Manton Bay nest thus freeing up the Rutland Osprey Project 2017 thread for general news on all the other birds, nests and projects.
For anyone new following Manton Bay, Maya and Blue 33(11) have been the resident pair for the last two years and to date have raised six chicks. More details about the nest and a table of the breeding data can be found here. Last season Maya returned on the 21 March and Blue 33(11) arrived a few days later on the 27 March.

I am sure I speak for us all in wishing Maya and Blue 33(11) a safe journey home and for another successful season at Manton Bay.
and here is another resting, putting its stamp on the Nest, that is until 33 or Maya arrives, 33 usually makes short work of EG's Eggs,Doh!!
Maya will see off those EG as soon as she returns. I have seen her diving bombing any that come within 100 ft of her nest! She's none too keen on them.
Thanks, Mary, for Alan's pics of the wonderful and very much missed 5R. I was thrilled to have seen him at the end of his last season on the Manton Bay nest.
Thanks, Mike, for the map link.
Can't wait for the Ospreys to return and hope they can evict the geese again.
Kind regards, Ann
Now who/what is this?
Birdies LG DU update.
Mike B said: Mary, in the past they have covered the nest with a large builders bag or similar BUT it has had to be removed in good time before the return of the birds and as soon as it is off the geese take advantage. Bearing in mind its location it is not something that can be easily and quickly dealt with. I guess experience has indicated that it is not worth the effort?

Mike I think it may have been in a blog from Rutland, and as you say it would have been removed long before the Ospreys were due back. Let's hope Maya is on form and gets rid of those EG quickly.

That's a cormorant, Mike, who I think has been there ever since I got up the cam. I will have a scroll thru later to see if anything changed much.
IMAGICAT
I can't see that the cormorant has moved from the spot, and it's still there.
I seem to recall that a pair of cormorants slept on the nest last year, Scylla, of course not when the Ospreys were there. I'd rather have them than the Geese--easier for the Ospreys to chase off!

Yes they did, GB, and we got some lovely pics of them, especially in the sun.
I was beginning to think my cam was frozen but the bird suddenly came to life, then reverted to its sleeping position as in Mike's snap above.
It is still there in the same post that Mike captured. Great captures Scylla, looks like it's directing traffic when it sticks its wing out lol....
