The purpose of this thread is for recording the season’s day to day activity at the Manton Bay nest thus freeing up the Rutland Osprey Project 2017 thread for general news on all the other birds, nests and projects.
For anyone new following Manton Bay, Maya and Blue 33(11) have been the resident pair for the last two years and to date have raised six chicks. More details about the nest and a table of the breeding data can be found here. Last season Maya returned on the 21 March and Blue 33(11) arrived a few days later on the 27 March.

I am sure I speak for us all in wishing Maya and Blue 33(11) a safe journey home and for another successful season at Manton Bay.
Mike .. is that a hole scraped out towards the font of the nest or is it just the angle?
I hope those pesky EGs haven't been digging and I can't help but wonder just when they will make their appearance!

Looks like the EG's have been active to me Karen!
Birdies LG DU update.
Thanks Mike - Just as I thought and how awful! Hopefully Maya is back quick and sees them off.
They are on the nest just now and one of them is bedded down in that hole!
Snap Karen.

Thanks for posting this map Mike, its handy to locate all the names we hear mentioned but have no idea where they are.
EJ's Memorial Balgavies Loch Ospreys 2023
I seem to recall one year that the team had put an upturned bucket on the nest to deter the geese, or am I just imagining that :-)
Its a pity they haven't done it this year. As geese will be geese, I hope they don't start laying eggs :-(
Using Bindies links tool I was going back to see if I could find a photo of the nest with some sort of bucket or obstruction on it, but I was drawn to this post by Alan on 22 March 2012, and thought it would nice to post it here as a Memory of the wonderful 5R who is one of those legendary Ospreys. There really is a host of information, details and history of the Rutland birds on this forum when you look back at the threads over the years.

Thank you, Mary, and Alan too!
However, I am seriously MIFFED !!! The cam is online a day early and I wasn't on it :o :o :o
OK, bye-bye OKC USA, hello Manton Bay... in a minute.
IMAGICAT
Mary, in the past they have covered the nest with a large builders bag or similar BUT it has had to be removed in good time before the return of the birds and as soon as it is off the geese take advantage. Bearing in mind its location it is not something that can be easily and quickly dealt with. I guess experience has indicated that it is not worth the effort?
