RUTLAND OSPREY PROJECT - 2017

The 2017 season is almost upon us and my first thoughts are of 03(97) / Mr Rutland as he was usually the first back on or around the 17th March and heralded the start of the season.

Sadly 03(97) is no longer with us but it is nice to think of him and smile knowing his legacy will live on as we now eagerly await the safe return of all the regulars and also new returnees.

A safe journey to all.

  • Thanks for posting news of Clarach (Blue 2R) Sheila.  Great to read of an unattached female around.

As well as 51(11) - 30(10) is also back.  He claimed Site B last year but did not attract a mate.

I don't know if he has again claimed Site B but if so, could be another potential unattached male looking for a mate!

  • Oh, Karen, that is good news.  Exciting times ahead, if we get to hear about it!

It is Sheila :-)     30(10) was seen fishing at Horn Mill 27 March.  Link to post about it

I am sort of hoping we will hear more about Site B and its successor in Ken's diary.

  • Thanks, again!!  I clearly missed that.

  • Wonderful to see that Clarach has been seen at Rutland.  I hope she and 3J find nests and mates.  It would be great if one nested on Lagoon 1 with 51 and the other nested at Lagoon 4 or, even better, at site B, especially since both are descendants of the famed Mr. Rutland, 03(97).

    Kind regards, Ann

  • It certainly sounds as though Clarach is in the right place at the right time!  Let's hope she determinedly bulldozes into someone's life, rather like her mother did at Dyfi.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

"The sixth osprey fishes at Horn Mill Trout Farm! Yesterday as well as 28/10 fishing during the morning session we had a visit from 06/09. He wasn't in any rush to leave either! After catching his fish he spent the next 20 minutes eating it at the back of a willow tree, just 20 metres from the hide. He then dived again making off with another trout presumably taking back to the nest.

Here's a list of the birds that have fished here over the couple of weeks...

    28(10)

28(10) is a 7 year-old male who fledged from Site B in 2010. He returned for the first time two years later and was also seen several times at Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire. In 2014 28 paired up with Maya on the Manton Bay nest at Rutland Water Nature Reserve when her previous mate, 5R(04), failed to return. Within a matter of days the birds were sitting on eggs, but then 28 was ousted from the nest by 33(11). Later that summer he settled on an artificial nest away from the reserve. In 2015 28 returned to the same nest and paired up with a three year-old female, 2F(12) and raised a single chick. 28 is easily identified by a damaged right wing which is almost certainly the result of an old injury that he sustained before returning to Rutland in 2012.

    33(11)

33(11) is a 6 year-old male who fledged from Site B in 2011. He first returned to Rutland in 2013 and then ousted 28(10) from the Manton Bay nest in 2014. Last summer 33 and Maya raised three very strong chicks at the Manton Bay nest, watched by people all over the world thanks to the Rutand Ospreys nest cam.

    01(09)

01(09) is an 8 year-old male who fledged from the Site B nest in 2009. He first returned to Rutland in 2011 and has been breeding with well-known female 5N at an off-site nest since 2013. In recent years he has been a regular visitor to the fish farms at Horn Mill and Ryhall, and was even photographed catching two fish simultaneously in 2015. No wonder he is known as a fishing machine!

    30(10)

30(10) fledged from the Manton Bay in 2010, and first returned to Rutland in 2012. In 2015 he was one of two young males who attempted to oust seventeen year-old 03(97) - otherwise known as Mr Rutland - from the Site B nest. The amazing drama was filmed by the BBC Springwatch cameras.

    06(09)

06(09) is an 8 year-old male who fledged from the Site O nest in 2009. He first returned to Rutland two years later and then bred for the first time at an off-site nest in 2014. In December 2015 06 was photographed at his wintering site on the Barbarie coast in Northern Senegal.

    1J(13)

1J(13) fledged from the Manton Bay nest in 2013. He first returned to Rutland last summer, and was also seen at Fishlake Meadows in Hampshire. During the winter 1J was photographed at his wintering site in Cadiz in southern Spain.
