Weekly Chat Sunday July 4 2010

Hallo all:   I put up the painters' tape showing the dimensions of the various flat-screen tellys (tellies?) we're looking at and now we're thinking maybe we don't need a really big one.

Auntie: Great that you had a lovely day at Pohtiolampi; how fun to see ospreys in action.

OG: I say put Loch Garten for sure on your trip north!  We expect a full report!  OMG: That python/gator photo was fascinatingly gross.  Talk about his eyes being bigger than his belly!!  Eeeeuw!  Why did I think orchids were a hot-weather plant....    Well - if you go to Caerlaverock, hope you enjoy it. Are "kissing gates" the same as stiles?  All I can remember is "Would you rather run a mile, jump a stile, or eat a pancake in a field?"  Oh dear. Talk about regressing......  Thanks for update on Big Rig Steve; haven't been on the computer all day. Had earnest discussion with vines, who have promised to behave, and gave some encouragement to the tomatoes, which are being a bit shy.  Currently, our ailing Navel Orange tree is getting a lot of TLC in the form of deep watering followed by nutritional snack that will make it feel better (and we hope, look and and taste  better).

AQ: Universal laws transcend borders. :-)

It's July 4 - Independence Day - tomorrow; will start off the day shortly after 6 a.m.(!)  with live Wimbledon coverage (on our normal channel - just checked!), then will putter about before picking up daughter in late afternoon to go to Mission Santa Ynez, where we'll watch July 4 fireworks display.  OH not thrilled with fireworks, so he'll stay home and keep Lightning company (she doesn't like them either).

In the meantime, off to check on osprey cams.

  • Evening all:  Picked up fancy new cable box for our fancy new telly, then off to the roses with a salad from a nice deli. Sat among the roses (on a bench) and read Alexander McCall Smith's Double Comfort Safari Club then went to work on my little patch. Lovely afternoon, sunny and warm but not hot. Got to chat to a lot of visitors while wielding my clippers and rake.

Heather - Funny, our NPR station carries BBC World News overnight too - and when they mention the time, it's UK time - 8 hours ahead. It's nice; it always makes me feel "connected" to the old country.  :-)

Lindybird!  "Off to get something alcoholic"!!??  :-))  I just had two small glasses of wine - Friday evening dontcha know.

AQ:  Glad you managed to keep the electrical power while all around you lost theirs.  Witty OH!  :-)  I have to say I prefer parrots to octopii (that can't be right - looks very weird), although I prefer the octopus's prediction - it even made it onto our evening news!  Love all the Universal Laws!  :-))  Wattle has signed off for a couple of week - so say Hi to her from us when you see her.

    Hi and Bye everyone else.

AQ:  . . . .  Wattle has signed off for a couple of week - so say Hi to her from us when you see her.

Will do. And I shall try to give her a precis of events she misses.

  • Morning All:  Almost  sunny here this morning: promises to be nicer later on.

Dramatic news last night & this morning,  (for those not in UK, they have been trying to find a gunman who has been hiding in the woods in the NE of England) as he has now shot himself, a predicatable outcome but at least no one else got hurt in the final hours.

Shocked to hear this morning that next March they are holding another countrywide Census of the population and its going to cost wait for it!  - 480 million pounds!!!!   Fail to see how it could cost so much unless the forms are printed on gold plated paper & collated by lawyers who charge a thousand pounds an hour for their work.  Apparently there are moves afoot to stop any further Census due to the prohibitive costs, and quite right too, as the use of this information is not entirely obvious. I'm expecting my OH to be taken off in a prison van when ours arrives, as he flatly refuses to answer questions about his 'sexuality' and religious beliefs. We filled in one form for a survey recently about our GP's practice & he wouldn't answer some of the questions..... <sigh>    (My son always puts 'Jedi' when asked about his religion!)

Dashed off to get my hair cut yesterday at 5.00pm, just when we were wondering about whether the Ring&Bling was going ahead- came back to find that although all were sitting peaceably on the nest in calm weather, there was no action. Roy Dennis must have gone home by then.

Off to 'feed' the washing machine & other excitements:  have a Good Day.

  • Oh but Lindybird, think of all those people eagerly looking at censuses from 1891, 1901, tracing their ancestors, big business now, although I think with the vast numbers of people on this planet now it could be a mammoth task for anyone looking for us in 100 years!  And I'm sure it didn't cost so much back then.  Also, I agree the questions are rather intrusive now, they want to know more and more about us.  I don't answer properly either.  I too have to feed the washing machine now, but it's raining and grey here, so it won't get dry very quickly.

  • Morning All, Another hot morning here. I put my washing out last night and it is dry this morning. OH has just been to do a 'top up shop' for us. He started doing some shopping when I hurt my ankle a few weeks ago and now seems to ask if I want him to do any shopping!!

Linda / Terry; As I knew very little about my parent's ancestory, the census have proved very useful to trace people and then able to trace further back. Just wish I had asked more questions but my father had very little contact with his family. We have also found an alteration to a surname because of religion. It has all been so fascinating and enlightening.

  • Good morning all from a very hot and humid Poole.  It all got a bit too much for me yesterday and it is not much better today.  Just catching up with everything now.  Won't be able to look in this evening as off to see Joe Brown again.  I hever get fed up with seeing him, he is still the cheeky person he always was.  We have quite a lot shows in the nest week and half.  Going to see Strictly Come Dancing the Professions on Wednesday evening, a tap dance show next Saturday and the following Tuesday The Pet Shop Boys.  I am sure there is going to be some opportunies for dancing at the last show as it is all standing.  Let's hope I can make it through the evening.  Will have to have long lie in the nest day I think.

Hope you all have a nice weekend and take care.

  • For any folks who don't read the Daily Update regularly:

Richard has posted a new blog. There will be no ringing and tagging this year. A wise decision, I think.

  • some wonderful photos, thanks to all.  On Hamish in his red collar. Dillon has one too, and a green one (so far so good)but then he also has a pink one which OH refuses to let him wear. Now as OH is happy to wear some nice pink shirts, I really think thats a bit daft.!!!!!!

  • LINDY  smiled at your pic of the trees. It is so windy in Shetland that there aren't any trees, just a few half hearted twiggy things. Some Shetlanders say they get claustrophobic when they visit the mainland For me I love them as we have Cullodan Forest a minutes walk from the house it is just as well that I do

  • MARGOBIRD   glad hearing aid successul, you sound really pleased. My bro has worn 2 since the age of 5 (probably the result of being born 2 months prem in 57 (wasn't expected to live so glad he did) then it got me thinking how things have come on. I had a great uncle tommy who had to use a hearing trumpet. Can you imagine?!!!!!
