Weekly Chat, Sunday June 13, 2010

Morning everyone and welcome to a new week!  Last week's Weekly Chat ended with some interesting entries and very interesting links (wonderful pix of swan giving cygnets a ride, courtesy of Lindybird, and, thanks very much Alan; another perspective on those oil-covered pelicans - good news too!).  OG: Not rushing and dashing; kids are here and headed to bed early for ultra-early departure. Margobird: Thanks for update on Hope and Lily.

Gather USA/England draw was result of bungle by England goalkeeper?

  • Morning all:

AQ: Seems so recently that you were languishing in horribly hot temps - now it's almost mid-winter for you?  Congrats on successful shopping trip - sounds like you've got enough options with those two outfits for christenings, etc. !!  :-)     Margobird: Congrats on your first post-op shower - that's always such a nice treat! OG: Peaceful Sunday underway right now. Kids up and  left just before 2 a.m. - to beat the hot desert temps. I called them at 8 a.m. when I woke up again (had to see them out the door with bags of snacks, etc.) and they were already in Quartzite, AZ (a one-horse town, if that) and should be home in plenty of time to relax this afternoon and rest up before work tomorrow.  I plan to spend the day in the garden with a pile of newspaper sections with articles I've wanted to read. High possibility of a nap on the horizon.  Lindybird: Would be interesting to see if that TV program gets any response from viewers about its boorish tactics. Blech!   jsb: Good to see you and visit us when you have the time!  I've seen Winged Migration - it got a lot of very positive attention here when it was originally released in the theaters. Critics aside, it probably made people more aware of the problems/dangers facing migrating birds, which is all to the good. BrendaH: Yes, indeed - always nice to get that "We're home!" call.   HeatherB:  Auntie shows up now and then on the Daily Update; a few weeks ago I said we hadn't seen her much and she said she was watching a lot of bird cams, so maybe when the season slows down, she'll get a chance to hang out.  Speaking of which (bird cams) has anyone checked out the stork cam lately?  http://storchennest-hoechstadt.de/live-cam  It's not streaming, but there are three - I think - HUGE birds, not to mention the adults, perched high above that town square.  Alan: Sounds like a busy day there!  :-)  But what a shame that you - and others - find the Springwatch program has gone south (down the toilet, so to speak). Has anyone e-mailed them to tell them they've lost their focus - and are losing viewers?  Diane: Does Stinky really stink? :-(   I guess a de-humidifier wouldn't help your Dad? I see them in the stores.....  Good you've got the oxygen backup for him.   I haven't got the nerve to complain about our weather... :-)

Re Community pages vs. the Main Diary. I too like the immediacy of posts on these pages.  Also, I've noticed that some of the comments and questions on the Main Diary don't get answered, but I guess that's a function of having so many people on that page - wasn't anywhere near that big even last year, from what I remember.  I also wish they'd do whole new blogs rather than updates since you have to scroll through all the comments to find the official word on some development, but whatever works for the staff is fine, given that they're doing all the work!  :-)    What's also good about the community pages is that anyone can start a new special-interest thread!   OK. Really must put on some clothes and organize a bowl of cereal of something before I start relaxing!  :-)  Have loads of towels to wash since everyone who was over here last week loves to take showers here (the downside of remodeling!).  :-)))

In the meantime, everyone take care and IF ANYONE NEW TO THE BLOGS IS READING THIS, PLEASE JUMP IN AND SAY HALLO - most of us didn't know each other at all a year or so ago!

  • Thanks Annette for the link to the Stork cam. I remember watching that one when there was a very snowy nest with the adults looking out over the town.

  • Annette - I am so relieved to see the words 'relax' and 'relaxing' in your post!!!!!  Know what you mean about washing towels- daughter, son in law ,one 5 year old and one baby 11 months stayed one night, went home this morning. Washing machine has been on overtime. Baby sick last evening over herself, daddy, babygro,  carpet and grobag. Plus towels as normal. How did my poor mum ever manage?

  • Hi.   Been busy today, as took Dog to the park this morning (he enjoyed his swim!) then lunch,  then visitors, then had a nap which turned into a   l o n g rest !  Woke up on the sofa to find Dog regarding me seriously "well, where is my dinner, then, its 20 minutes late...."

Busy just now making phone calls around the family to check all is Well with all.  (Baby is a bit of a bump now, and its Mum has just done 40 lengths in the swimming pool, so she must be feeling well).

Surprised to hear so many of you don't enjoy the Springwatch prog. any more:  we still watch avidly and even enjoy the extra programme afterwards (Unsprung ?)  with all the chat and banter:  we think that they are all a great team and so knowlegeable, we learn something every day from them.  I rather like the way the whole programme does not hang on one person so to speak, and they all have a different style and something interesting to say.

HeatherB:  I am also a blogging virgin, as have never been on any other sites to do this, but then its so friendly here and everyone is so nice.   Don't know all the etiquette but do my best to rub along and not annoy anyone!  Speaking of which, I had better shut up now!  Have a nice evening, All.

ps:   I also got the impression that auntie  was rather busy at the moment, I'm sure she's OK.

  • Glad that you think all is well with Auntie. I tend to scroll really fast to catch up sometimes, and think that I miss things. However, definitely missed Auntie!!

  • AQ   read that in olden times everyone used to marry in July as they had their yearly bath in June and therefor were not too pongy on the day!!!!!!!

  • LINDYBIRD     that poor swam in Cambridge. How dare they. and then to tease him by going so close, have they no feelings........    obviously not

  • DIANE   like the sound of stinky, but do tell , is he stinky????/ don't know much about snakes but didnot think they were smelly                if not the obvious, how did he get his name?

  • HeatherB and Lindybird – I too have not blogged anywhere else – never felt safe, but here I feel secure and among friends.

BrendaH – as you say re new bloggers, we have invited them, so we can just await developments – maybe some will join us after the fledging, or maybe they don’t feel the need to stay in touch which we all experienced last year!

Annette – pleased your G-D and her OH were making such good time on their journey.  Thanks for the Hoechstadt Stork cam reminder.  Just three (presumably young) visible right now.

Lindybird - poor Buzz (hope I remembered the correct dog here!) – he needed his dinner on time after his energetic swim!!  Pleased all is well with Sweetpea’s Mum!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Evening all: Just managed to stagger in from garden to heat up leftover quiche and make quick fruit salad for lunch; then it's back out again for nap, reading, etc.  Granddaughter and her OH arrived safely home, but an hour later than expected due to big bike event on the final leg to Prescott.  Must say, when formerly-yappy-but-now-grown-up dog lolled in our patio chairs, didn't leave anywhere near the hairy mess that Lightning leaves when she sneaks up there. Must have another word with her......

Thanks for amusing posts - Heather - bedding and towels all piled up and at top of tomorrow's to-do list. My mother didn't have a washing machine - used to do the sheets in the bathtub - poor old darling. Sigh...  Take care all.
