Weekly Chat, Sunday June 13, 2010

Morning everyone and welcome to a new week!  Last week's Weekly Chat ended with some interesting entries and very interesting links (wonderful pix of swan giving cygnets a ride, courtesy of Lindybird, and, thanks very much Alan; another perspective on those oil-covered pelicans - good news too!).  OG: Not rushing and dashing; kids are here and headed to bed early for ultra-early departure. Margobird: Thanks for update on Hope and Lily.

Gather USA/England draw was result of bungle by England goalkeeper?

  • Hi, all. I'm happy to say that the aggressive little Kingbirds -- or, as I call them, the Stephen Kingbirds -- have vacated my garage. Yay!!!  I think the adults are okay, because I heard their "electric fence" alarm call down by the creek today. I never saw any chicks, so the nest must have failed, which I do feel very bad about. I wanted them to have a successful season, despite the fact that the little warriors claimed my garage. I haven't summoned up the courage to go in there and check their nest. I've been going in just far enough to retrieve the lawn mower and getting the heck out before they attack. LOL!!! I don't know why the nest failed. Predation, maybe. Stinky, the big snake, is a good climber, so it's possible that Stinky had an egg breakfast one morning. :-O I'm going to make sure the old building is sealed next year.

It was 93 F/34 C here today. Humidity is 100% right now. We had a huge storm about 6:30 PM. Surrounding area had 64-mile-per-hour wind gusts, but we live in a valley, so the wind wasn't that bad here. The sky was as dark as night. Lots of people don't have power now. According to the news, we are stuck in a "stalled tropical front" until Wednesday.

OG: Glad you enjoyed your concert.     Lindybird: So glad that Meg, the puppy, is thriving. I loved the swan link. Such beautiful birds. I didn't like that Mr. Asbo, the Cambridge U. swan, had been caged, though. Why couldn't they just move their rowing event? I really hate to see wild birds caged.     Margobird: I can't watch the coverage of the oiled seabirds, either. Just sickening.     dibnlib: I think you should pick some lottery numbers for me. LOL Congrats on your prizes.     Alan: Lovely puffin picture.     Brenda H: I hope you enjoy Wimbledon.

Annette: Thanks for starting the new thread. I was going to do it if you hadn't. Hope you had a great visit with your granddaughter! Take some time tomorrow to relax before the big garden renovation! I hope it goes smoothly and quickly.

  • Hi everyone.

Thanks to Annette for starting another Weekly Chat.  So sorry I've not posted on the Weekly Chat for a while.  There so much I'd love to say but wouldn't know where to start.  So much excellent input gets put into the weekly chat threads and the rollercoaster of emotions is really good and amazing to behold.  I may get back to individual replies a bit later but as this is my first season watching the LG camera, I have chronic Ospreyitis.

This reminds me of some politician visiting the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.  As he was escored through various wards by a Matron he came across some men in a small ward.  The first kept on saying: "But we hae meat an' we can eat.." over and over again.  A second chap was making a real mess of A Man's A Man For A' That.  The third guy keeps on muttering: "Wee sleekit timorous, Ach whid dae ye call it?" getting more and more frustrated as time passes.  The political big cheese looks as if he's going to faint.  Then the Matron says:  "These poor men are aflicted with terrible Burns"

    Paul.

Warning!  This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar.  Approach with extreme edginess.

  • OMG it is RAINING again.

I hope Odin can fish well in the rain

  • Somehow EJ managed to get all of those huge chicks under her wings.

They are wiggling and trying to get out, but she knows they don't have enough actual feathers yet to keep them dry. Mum knows best !

  • Hi all: Heron: I've heard various versions of the "terrible Burns" joke!  Always a giggle though. :-))   Diane:  I didn't like the idea of the Mr. Asbo the Cambridge swan being locked up either.  Just so humans can bash into each other in boats?? (But who else but humans would spend time doing that?)  A stalled tropical front, eh? Until Wednesday?  :-(((  But good news (I guess) about your noisy squatters.

  • Margobird - Don’t worry about bath. I’ve read that Q Elizabeth the First only bathed once a year - whether she needed it or not !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Diane - You seem to be having a lot of storms. Is this usual? We are shivering here today. Maybe I can send you some cooler weather? Mid afternoon and it has only reached 13 C. Last night’s min was 4 C in the city and 2.4 at the airport (nearby).

Lindybird - Lovely pics of swans. Poor Mr Asbo. What makes humans think their space is more important.

Yesterday the boys removed the liquidamber, leaving the stump for another day. Oh woe, where will my lorikeets go now; they love the seeds. Fsil took all the wood for his parent’s woodburner. The girls had a successful morn - I have selected 2 outfits for the weddings. (Such a relief - now I can get on with important things LOL.) Alterations will take 3 weeks. Deep blue 3 piece, fairly plain, for the first. Pink (sort of fuschia) 3 piece silk, embroidered jacket for the 2nd. They actually mix & match - not that I was looking for that. I am more likely to wear the first again. Of course my outings requiring such dress-up-ing occur about once a decade !!!!

  • Hello aquilareen that made me laugh about having a bath once a year.  Happier this morning as can now have a shower and wash my hair.  Dressing came off without too much trouble so wounds should heal a lot quicker now.    Pleased you have your wedding outfits sorted out, always nice to have more than one to choose from.

  • Morning Everyone:  Happy Sunday.

It rained in the night, here, but in spite of that another red poppy has emerged and is waving at me together with the first one which opened the other day.  Will post a pic. later.

Glad to hear that AQ has finally sorted the outfits for the weddings problem - phew!  now you can sit back and worry about all the rest of it!  (both sound very nice,by the way - love fuchsia colours)  Know what you mean about ever wearing them again - mine was bought with a matching knitted top so the skirt could be worn again in less formal circumstances - then I put on half a stone and can't get into the darned thing now, so it's hanging forlornly in the wardrobe.

Bet that England goalkeeper woke up this morning and thought he'd had a bad dream! - "Oh no, I really did mess up! - aaaaaargh!"

Loved the joke Heron77  - hadn't heard that one!

There are now 339 folks in our Osprey Group, and counting!

    Have a Good Day, All.

  • Wet as forecast – but birds are happily feeding in large numbers, they just don’t need to use the water feature for their showers today!!  Just watched the demolition of a large fish at LG.

Annette – have a peaceful Sunday when you have waved goodbye to the family.

Diane – sorry your Kingbird nest appears to have been unsuccessful – but pleased you will be reclaiming your garage – does the snake live in there?  Trying to imagine being stuck 5 days under a “stalled tropical front” with 100% humidity – you must be dripping!!  I hope you don’t lose your power.

Heron77 – have seen you on Daily thread – good that you called in here too.  Don’t try too hard to catch up with individuals – you’d then miss current stuff!

AQ – those temps are quite cool – especially going that low at night (they would be normal here, of course in about April and October).  I think we are currently averaging 18 by day and 10 by night.  Great that you confirmed the deep blue M-o-B outfit and found the second one too – just don’t lose or gain any weight before the weddings!!  Even if you are unlikely to wear the whole outfits again, you could maybe use the tops to dress up a smart pair of trousers for your monthly dinners.

All – I hope the ones who had a wet week will have a better one, and that various recoveries will continue.  Now coffee time!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • ps:   The asbo Swan at Cambridge was shown on a TV programme, admidst much laughter, as if it was funny that he should be so protective of his family.  Two days later, it turned out after how the locals described it,  that the camera crew had asked a boat to go as near as possible to him in order to annoy him and get good 'footage' of his rage!   I was so annoyed, it shows what lengths these producers will go to to get a good story.

margobird:   Poor AQ  has two daughters getting married, so has to find two of everything for the weddings.Expect she will lay down in a darkened room after they are all safely wed!
